Good literature. What is good literature? As my high school English teacher Dr. Ravens croft would say, “Good literature is anything that I approve of, or that we read in this class.” Yet I do not believe, as great of teacher that Dr. R is, that he is the final say in what good literature is, and neither am I. What I do believe is that there must be certain elements that each literary piece must contain in order to be considered “good literature.” And the more elements that the work contains, the more likely it is that the literary piece will be considered good literature. The first element is understanding the literary piece.
If there is no comprehension of the story, poem, etc. , then it can not be considered well written. Understanding the literary piece opens the door for other elements to be exposed, such as plot, characters, description, and suspense. By using description the author can create real to life characters, nail biting suspense, and a plot that conveys every detail the author intended. These four tools can be effectively used to create imaginary masterpieces that the greatest artist in the world could not convey with a hundred pictures. And we all know that a picture is worth a thousand words.
When combinations of these elements are in place it allows for the essence of good literature show itself. It often will come in the form of creative ways to describe the most inanimate object or the slightest detail of a scene. This creativity allows the story to flow from one description to the next keeping the steady interest of the reader. Yet at the same time that there is creative description, the author of a good literary piece will be to the point.

Every writer catches the attention of their readers. They do this through the role of characterization, rhyme, tone, and several other things. The way the story is written we have to use our imagination to understand what the writer is trying to tell ...
They will not spend useless words and phrases describing an object that has no relevance to the story. The last pieces of the good literature puzzle create a personal meaning. This allows the literary piece to connect with the reader. Everyone can relate to personal experience, so a literary piece that can derive meaning from real feelings and emotions will have a greater impact on the reader.
Good pieces of literature will also make a statement about someone or something. This may be done with slight undertones or with blunt, concrete statements. Once again this involves the readers’ feelings into the work giving more of an emotional connection. And the final element that good literature possesses is forcing the reader to think about the subject that they just read.
This is an essential part for the simple fact that the literary piece that stimulates thought is a piece that will stand the test of time. And after a while if people are still reading the literary piece then it is bound to adopt the title of good literature.
