Graduation Employment Goals My target industry is Information Technologies. According to WSA website, for over thirty years, the computer-related and software industry has grown to a $35 billion business. Computer-related industry is a major contributor to the countrys employment. Approximately 38% of all jobs in Washington state embrace IT-based positions such as hardware and computer software, biotechnology, telecommunications, to mention a few. All this witnesses that computer technologies in general and IT jobs in particular have a great future and plenty of opportunities. So, my target job belongs to information technologies.
What about my career goal elective plan, I have a sketch of it: First of all, Ill spend time on self-assessment process and exploration. Ill gather information about my interests, skills and values. According to my IT target job, I will take some core courses proposed by Cal Poly Pomona (POCMP).
Cal Poly Pomona is one of only six polytechnic universities nationwide, so I will get great opportunities to blend theory and practice. There are several courses I would like to take. First of all, Ill take Introduction to Microcomputing (CIS 101) using personal computers and personal productivity software.
This course includes 4 lectures/problem solving units. Object-oriented Prog with Java (CIS 234), including introduction to computer programming of business information systems will be also very useful. This course will provide me with basic programming skills using Java language as well as object concepts. However, this course requires Microcoputer proficiency or CIS 101, minimum grade of C (2.0) in STA and ENG 104 or 22. The next course I plan to take is CIS 235, Intro Obj-Orntd Sys Ana & Desn. This course consists of introduction to object-oriented systems analysis and design using anobject oriented case tool, as it is described at Cal Poly Pomonas website. This course requires minimum grade of C (2.0) in CIS 234, STA 120 and ENG 104 or IGE 122.

The next course I plan to take will be CIS 304, Intermed Java Progrmng for Bus. It includes data representation, inheritance, data structures and matching algorithms. The professor will teach us to build graphics and file operations. Besides, Ill gain skills on building business applications emphasizing complex sequence, iteration, and selection algorithms. This course requires minimum grade of C (2.0) in CIS 234 and CIS 235. I decided to take CIS 305, database design and Development. Ill have skills on data modeling and normalization.
Ill get familiar with relational database design and development using entity relationships diagrams and CASE tools as well as accessing and updating databases with SQL. This course requires a minimum grade of C (2.0) in CIS 234, CIS 235, and CIS 304. The two last courses will be CIS 307 and CIS 338. CIS 307 is Business telecommunications. This course will give knowledge on telecommunications link components and functions, OSI model, integrated traffic on WAN and LAN as well as network applications. It requires a minimum grade of C (2.0) in CIS 234. Finally, CIS 338 is Clint/Srvr App Dev/Visual basic.
This course supposes learning developing multi-tier client/server business applications using visual basic and relational DBMS. CIS 338 requires a minimum grade of C (2.0) in CIS 305 and CIS 307. So, after taking courses, Ill start a job search part in IT industry narrowing my job search by programming and designer vacancies. Ill be able to develop a strong resume and plan my job search accordingly. As far as I remember, on-campus interviews begin in September, so Ill sign in and take part in them. As the part of my job search campaign, Ill attend various job search, resume and interviewing workshops.
