From the start of the 1920s, the United States was faced with the rapidly growing problem known as The Great Depression. As the depression prolonged, Franklin D. Roosevelt came up with several economic plans such as the “CCC” The Civilian Conservation Corp. in 1933 to help the people of the United States. The Great Depression effected many groups such as farmers. As these problems became greater, Franklin D. Roosevelt came up with responses to help support the farmers. As these relief and reform efforts continued on, the United States began to be refurbished into the country it once was.
Due to the Great Depression, Roosevelt needed to come up with certain relief programs to help the people of the United States. Roosevelt’s favorite program was the “CCC” The Civilian Conservation Corp. Part of the new deal of Franklin D. Roosevelt the CCC provided unskilled manual labor jobs related to the conservation and development of natural resources. It began it 1933 and ended in 1942. Throughout these years, the CCC provided work for 2.5 million young men between the ages of 18-25 conserving natural resources. The jobs consisted of planting trees, building bridges and parks, and setting up flood control projects. Maximum enrollment at any one time was 300,000. The CCC provided them with shelter, clothing, and food, together with a small wage of $30 a month. $25 of which had to be sent home to their families. The CCC also led to a greater public awareness and appreciation for the outdoors and the nation’s natural resources. By the CCC becoming one of the most popular parts of the new deal, it raised high awareness for the development of a program to protect our natural resources. The whole idea of the development of these relief plans, one being the CCC, was to: bring relief for those who were suffering and the recovery of the economy so it would grow again.

As the depression continued, Americans needed a type of reform movement that would insure them and stay in effect for a long time. The social security Act of 1935 was a combination of both public assistance and insurance. It was known to be a “safety net for the American people”. Congress had passed a range of reform legislation, one being the Social Security Act as part of the New Deal. The law had three major parts to it. The third was the assistance to dependent children, the elderly, ill, and disabled Americans. Your social security was always there and was considered to be a lasting effect on Americans.
During World War I, farmers worked hard to produce crops and livestock. Many farmers expanded their farms, causing them to take out loans. During the 1920s it was the most production ever in the shortest amount of time. When prices fell they tried to produce even more to pay their debts, taxes and living expenses. In the early 1930s prices dropped so low that many farmers went bankrupt and lost their farms, forcing them to foreclose. Sometimes, the price of a bushel of corn fell to just eight or ten cents. Some farm families began burning corn instead of coal in their stoves because corn was cheaper. Sometimes the countryside smelled like popcorn from all the corn burning in the kitchen stoves. Farmers began to become angry and desperate. They were furious with the government and demanded they find a way to relieve them from debt. Later on, farmers resulted to forming groups like labor unions and strikes demanding they be paid more for their products.

In reaction to the struggle’s farmers faced, congress passed the “AAA” The Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1933. This act benefited farmers significantly. The AAA set limits on the size of the crops and herds farmers could produce. Those farmers that agreed to limit production were paid. Checks were sent mailbox to mailbox. These checks helped farmers pay off their debt, living expenses, and taxes. The main purpose of the AAA was to reduce the surplus of crops and therefore raise the value of the crops. Unfortunately, farmers didn’t make a large indentation in society until the 1940s when WW2 demanded a large sum of food.
