Have you ever wondered how life would be like if mostly everyone was poor? If you only had a few pairs of shirts and pants to wear the whole year? If you never got presents on your birthday, because your family couldn’t afford it? Or if you only had a pair of shoe’s to wear until your feet grew out of them? I have experienced all of this and much worse, in my life during the Great Depression. My name is Irene Roy tman, and I’m 31 years old. I am one of the many people who lived during the Great Depression. The Great Depression was a time of economic collapse from 1929-1941.
It was extremely difficult to find a job during this time. But I managed to find a job. I work as a Live in Maid in Florida. My boss was one of the few people who were wealthy, so he could afford a maid. My job is somewhat difficult, because I work all day and don’t have much time to rest. My job consists of washing the dishes, vacuuming the house, dusting, moping the floor, making the beds, cleaning and organizing all the rooms, cooking, and doing the laundry.
I also go to the food store to buy food for my boss and his family. I get paid $260. 00 yearly. I have $5.
30 to spend per week. I have some good advantages in my job. I don’t have to pay rent, and I don’t have to buy food with my money. That saves up a lot of money. I am the only person who works in my family. I have two daughters.
My oldest one who is 16 is named Mandy, and my younger one who is 13 is named Hallie. I also have a husband who’s name is Danny. My whole family lives with me in my boss’s house. Both of my kids go to school, and get a good education. My husband stays home with me, helping me do my job.

This week has been such a horrifying week. At first, my dear old mother got very sick, so we had to take her to the doctor to cure her. That cost me $1. 80. Then I had to go check on her everyday, and she lives 40 minutes away, so I had to take a bus, which cost me $1. 40.

I felt very miserable. Then the worst thing happened, I lost my job! My boss who worked as a college teacher got fired. My family and I were very devastated and oblivious of what would happen to us.
