As complex as the guitar is, playing it is not that complicated. The guitar is an instrument in which the level of skill in the musician rises rapidly but still takes many years to master. There are basically two types of basic sounds that can be made by the guitar. The first is a chord. This is any combination of two or more notes played together. The other sound is a single note. This is formed by plucking or picking one string at a time.
If the sound of the guitar is bad, ninety-nine out of one hundred times, the guitar is out of tune. For chords to sound good, the strings must be in tune with each other.
Most players use what is called the fifth fret trick. Every string on a guitar is tuned up five frets(except B which is tuned up 4).
The fifth fret trick is performed by playing the fifth fret of the lower string and the higher string open. If the two notes sound the same, they are in tune. While most musicians use their ear to tune, there are a number of tuning devices. Tuning devices work by measuring the pitch of a note. If the note is off, the indicator will move left to indicate fatness and right to indicate sharpness. One might ask why use a tuning device when an ear will do the trick. If the player isn’t picky, or has a good ear, using their is ear is fine. However, if the player wants the guitar to be exactly in tune, a tuning device is the way to go. Out of all the guitars in the world, they could all be divided into two basic categories – electric and acoustic. Though similar, the two types of guitars have their differences. The acoustic uses no electricity, has a wide hollow body, has different types of strings, and the strings are tighter. The electric uses pick-ups to turn vibrations into electric signals, usually has a solid body, and uses an amplifier to create and amplify its sound.

The part of the guitar that is most often taken for granted is the pick-up. A pick-up or electromechanical transducer converts tones or vibrations made by the strings into electrical pulses of electricity. Most pick-ups have six magnetically charged pole pieces. The six pole
pieces are for the six strings. Most guitars have three pick-ups (six pole pieces each), spread between the tailpiece and the neck. A toggle switch allows you to choose which pick-up you want to sound dominate. Also, different pick-ups have different sounds and constructions. Bass pick-ups are placed differently than guitar pick-ups because they are placed relative to the strings. Some characteristics that decide a certain pick-ups certain sounds is its impedance, or resistance. Resistance is measured in ohms. A pick-ups ohms are determined by how many wire coils are wrapped around the pole piece. The fewer the coils, the lower the impedance, the cleaner the sound. The higher the coils, the higher the resistance, the dirtier the sound.
Some new advances in pick-up technology are switches on the body of the guitar that add or subtract a number of coils around the pole pieces. Often times there is more than one switch on the guitar that are for the different pick-ups.
Another new idea in pick-up technology is resonant peaks on the pole pieces. Resonant peaks directly effect the volume and tone of the note or chord being played. The apex of the peak effects the frequency of the strings vibration which effects the electrical current being sent to the amp which effects the sound.
If a certain guitarist does not like the sound of their pick-up, they can replace it with a different one. When purchasing a pick-up, there is not really anything, as far as structure, to look for. The best way to pick one is to listen to it. Some variables that should be taken into consideration before purchasing a pick are cost, guarantee and durability.
One major part of the guitar that makes it different from all other guitars it the neck. The shape and size of the neck greatly effect the guitarist is playing. Necks come in wood and aluminum.
Wood necks can often warp and be ruined. This has been partially corrected by gluing many layers of wood together to make the neck. The neck of the guitar should be perfectly straight. Some variations in necks are radius, width, thickness and taper. The feel of the neck is often the most important element to look for when purchasing a guitar. When it comes to what look for, it is all how it feels. Things to consider are, the shorter your fingers are, the smaller the radius should be. Also, if the guitarist plays mostly standing up, the width should be smaller.

A headstock can say everything about your guitar. The shape of the headstock determines the personality of the guitar. The trick of the headstock is to balance the body and the headstock so the balance creates a good looking guitar. Also, the angle of the headstock relative to the neck effects the sound and sustain of the guitar. Another problem people overlook is the output jack. Over time, the connection between the output jack and the pick-ups can become broken or damaged. One might hear a loud, fuzzy noise whenever the guitar is moved and then might conclude that there is something wrong with their amp. This is not always the case. Before taking an amp to be checked, one might want to do two things. First, make sure the output jack is securely screwed into place and isn’t loose. Second, one would want to check the wires that go from the output jack to the pick-ups. They should be shielded and well soldered. If there’s nothing wrong with the output jack, there might be something wrong with the input jack of the guitar cable. The cable wires can become broken
or disconnected if they are tripped over or tugged on. If this is the case, resoldering is probably the most prudent idea. New cables can be quite costly. However, if a new cable is needed, most cables have a limited warranty.
There are also many types of output jacks. Most older models of guitars have jacks that plug directly into the body of the guitar. However, the newer, more modern guitars, have angled jacks, like the Fender Stratocaster.
Another feature on a guitar that greatly effects the sound is the toggle switch setting. A toggle switch is a switch that is located on the body of the guitar. The toggle is a selector that selects which pickup you want to sound the loudest. Since different pickups are located at different locations under the strings, they pick up different sounds. The guitarist could use the toggle to select the rear pickup that is good for rhythm guitar and has a crisp sound. The middle setting is good for solo guitar because it has a soft sound. The pickup closest to the neck has a watery, full sound.
