Position paper Gun control in Canada? Good or bad? There have been many arguments for and against this registry when it was introduced in 1995. It supposedly would help the police solve crimes that involved firearms, and overall increase the safety of the public. The registry was projected to cost taxpayers just 85 million dollars over 5 years when it was first started in 1995. Now the price eight is estimated to be around 1 billion dollars. And the scary thing is about 80% of all the guns in Canada have not been registered yet. I believe that bill-c 68 should be discontinued because of the increasing costs and it does not seem to help the police solve crimes.
“The federal firearms program is a billion-dollar black hole” said Minister of Public Safety and Security Bob Runciman. It is a total waste of the taxpayer’s money. Imagine if that money had been spent on health care or for educational purposes. If the government wants to reduce crimes spend that money on police services. The sad thing about all of this is the government still wants to spend more and more money on continuing bill-c 68. How can bill-c 68 reduce crime when over 80% of all the guns in Canada are not registered? “We have an ongoing gun crisis including firearms-related homicides lately in Toronto, and a law registering firearms has neither deterred these crimes nor helped us solve any of them,” said Toronto Police Chief Julian Fantino.
There are many flaws with the Liberals Gun registry policy. Half a million to one million gun owners have yet to register for a firearms license. This is important because you cannot register your gun until you get a license, so how are police going to know where the guns are. Police will not be able to find the guns because it is not required for gun owners to store their weapon at their home, they could be at any residence. “None of the guns we know to have been used were registered, although we believe that more than half of them were smuggled into Canada from the United States.” Also added Police Chief Julian Fantino. The Gun Control registry was a good ideal but poorly implemented.
