Although Hamlet never really showed affection for Ophelia and he admitted to loving her once she was dead, he really did not love her at times. In the beginning, Hamlet and Ophelia seem to love each other and everything seemed to be going well. In this following quote, Hamlet is speaking to Ophelia and admits to loving her at one point. Hamlet tells Ophelia, “This was sometime a paradox, but now the time gives it proof. I did love you once” (Act 3, Scene 1, 123-124).
This quote doesn’t seem strong enough for Ophelia to actually believe Hamlet’s love for her.
This quote is important because it gives the reader a little hint of what Hamlet’s feelings for Ophelia are. It gives us insight on how Hamlet started to confuse Ophelia with love. As much as Ophelia loved Hamlet, Hamlet acts as if she is not even there. At one point in the play, Hamlet wants to send Ophelia to a nunnery. Hamlet tells Ophelia, “Get thee to a nunnery. Why wouldst thou be a breeder of sinners? ” (Act 3, Scene 1, 130-131).
This means that Hamlet wants Ophelia to go to a nunnery so that she won’t have any kids.
Hamlet doesn’t love her enough to have kids with her. This is important because it shows how much Hamlet really cares about Ophelia, when he doesn’t really care about her at all. He seems to not care about her because if he would’ve really cared about her then he would of not told her that. Even if he said that he wanted to send her to a nunnery, at other times it seems like he loves her. This ties into the example of a nunnery having a dual meaning, Hamlet was possibly telling ophelia to go to a whorehouse or go to a holy place for nun’s so she can be protected.
The Essay on Ham Vs Laertes Hamlet Ophelia Love
A foil is a means by which an author or playwright reveals one character in contrast with another character. In Hamlet, a play by William Shakespeare, the use of a foil is evident among the characters Hamlet and Laertes. Although adversaries, Laertes and Hamlet share several characteristics which make them similar, enabling the audience to learn more about each character individually. There are a ...
It was very hard for Hamlet to show his feelings toward Ophelia. In this following quote, Hamlet is speaking to Polonius about his daughter Ophelia, but it seems as if he doesn’t know her at this time in the play. Hamlet gives advice to Polonius telling him, “Let her not walk i’th’sun. Conception is a blessing, but as your daughter may conceive – friend, look to’t,” (Act 2 Scene 2 . 196-197).
Hamlet is giving Polonius advice to not let Ophelia walk in the sun because she might get pregnant and have a baby.
At this point in the play Hamlet doesn’t seem to know Ophelia that good and therefore he still doesn’t have feelings for her because maybe he hasn’t seen her yet. Once Hamlet sees Ophelia then maybe some sparks start to fly. The way hamlet writes this play could never really tell if Hamlet really did love Ophelia or not. At “o I loved Ophelia. Forty thousand brothers could not with all their quantity of love make up my sum. ,” (Act 4 Scene 1, 262-264).
Hamlet was talking to the King and Queen.
When Hamlet says, “he did love Ophelia at one point and he loved her a lot because not even forty thousand brothers could equal what he felt for her. This is important to know because it gives everybody a hint of what Hamlet really felt for her. This was definitely the peak of Hamlet’s love for Ophelia and the most straightforward he was towards his love for Ophelia. Like it was mentioned before, Hamlet seemed to be a little bit bipolar when it came to love. At times he seemed to show so much feelings for Ophelia, but at other times he acted like he never liked her or knew her.
He was sometimes so rude and mean to her. Hamlet tells Ophelia, “You should have not believed me; for virtue cannot so inoculate our old stock but we shall relish of it. I loved you not,” (Act 3, Scene 1, 126-128).
Hamlet seems to rudely tell Ophelia that he didn’t love her, maybe because he wanted her to forget about him and for her to not have feelings toward him. Of course Ophelia believed it and she probably fell in love with Hamlet. She was heartbroken to hear that Hamlet had said that. At this part in the play Hamlet starts to lose his love for Ophelia and is trying to get Ophelia to forget about him too.

In the end no one really knew if Hamlet really did love Ophelia or not. It was as if it was a mystery that was not resolved and that was meant to not be solved. Some people could think one thing and others could think another. The only person in this case who really knew if there was something between Hamlet and Ophelia is Shakespeare. The rest of the world is left wondering. Probably not even Hamlet nor Ophelia knew what was going on between them. Nobody will ever know. Works Cited Shakespeare, William. Hamlet. 5th ed.
