This movie is a story about freedom. It delves into the depths of the spiritual side of freedom, and levels off into the more tangible realm of concrete freedoms. It also has a deal of social commentary, and a hinting outlook on a different type of morality. This film brings all these aspects together, along with a great deal of humor, to try to put across a point. The point of this movie is, be free with yourself, to try to show a little humor, and to poke fun at some of the things in our society that needs poking.
The main point of the film is freedom, both spiritual and concrete. Maude is the embodiment of these freedoms in the movie. She shows this by being very free with others property, not letting anything get in her way once she sets about to do something, and by doing that which makes her happy. The way in which Maude is free with other’s property, usually cars, is her way of telling people that they do not have a hold on things, that it is best to love it while it is there for it may not be tomorrow. She also uses this in order to make herself happy, by trying a variety of different cars, each different, in order to see how each feels and how each handles itself. Maude’s attitude of letting nothing stand in her way is best illustrated by the tree that she transplants. She cannot stand to see the poor thing suffocating from the pollution and starving from lack of sunlight. She feels it necessary to liberate it, to take it where it may grow. She and Harold go about this. She will not let anything stop her, not a lack of tools, not the police, nothing. She accomplishes her goal, and does it well. This point is also well illustrated by Maude’s help in getting Harold out of being drafted. She aided him in this endeavor and they succeeded well. Her final triumph of freedom is the choice she has made of ending her life. She desires to end her life at the age of 80, the time she feels it would be best for her to go. This above all other things demonstrates her own personal notion of freedom.
The Essay on Freedom Versus Safety School Individual Feel
More Freedom or Safety - What Would You Choose Where does one draw the line between individual freedom and the safety of the community Recent tragedies in high schools around the country show a great increase in teen violence. Harold represents the extreme version of a spiritual norm, so obsessed with death that he cannot focus on life. His obsession with death is illustrated in his repeated suicide acts. The only purpose these acts of suicide have is to show Harold’s cry for attention from his mother as well as a part of the movie’s comic relief. His playacting of suicide was first started when he was in school and had blown up the chemistry lab. The police later came to his house and told his mother that he had died. The reaction he saw was one of grief, sadness, and caring. He has since felt a need to see it again. His reasoning behind this is, that if his life meant nothing he would then enjoy being dead. Through the movie Harold’s thoughts and ideas undergo a metamorphosis as his relationship with Maude deepens. His thoughts gradually turn away from death towards a more positive focus on life. The final result is shown in the end scene, where Harold’s last remnant of his constant death reminders, his hearse, is destroyed. He is then shown skipping away, playing the banjo.
In the film, if taken generally, one can see that Harold’s mother is not too terribly dissimilar from Harold. She focus’s on paltry things and does not give the attention and respect to Harold that he requires. The distractions and moral principles in her life do not allow for such a thing as freedom nor do they allow for a full and eventful life. This is shown in the movie by her constant forcing of her will and denial of Harold’s personal choice. She attempts to think for him. She does this not out of a mean spirit, but to do what she feels would be best for Harold. She does this by signing him up for a computer dating service, forcing him to get therapy, getting him drafted, purchasing him a new car that she feels would be more suiting, and by making him get married. He does do all the things she wants him to, except, with his own morbid twists. With his dates, he performs a suicide, or something equally gruesome. With getting drafted, he scares his uncle so much, that he does not allow him into the military. His car he turns into a hearse. His marriage is the most telling of these twists. He does choose a bride, it is however not one she quite approves of.

Harold’s uncle is a military man. It is alluded to that he has had combat experience; he lost an arm. His views on war were made quite clear by his statement that many material advantages are brought about by war. On first “meeting” this character, we are shown he keeps a picture of Nathan Hale on his calendar. His only statement about this is that America needs more Nathan Hales. During the first meeting between Uncle Victor and Harold, Uncle Victor is very cordial towards Harold, and explains to him the benefits of military life. Harold’s mother speaks to Uncle Victor and has Harold drafted into the army. Harold does not like this idea and enlists Maude to help bail him out. The two perform a bizarre act for Uncle Victor’s benefit. Uncle Victor is very disturbed by Harold’s actions and immediately terminates his enlistment.
This story illustrates the evolvement of a young morbid boy into a freer individual. The cinematography, the excellent performances from the actors and actresses, and the style of the movie all come together to form the fabrication of an excellent movie. Embedded within this movie there is a lesson to be learned and that lesson is to free yourself, do what you want to do, and above all else, make yourself happy.
