Sanatayanna (1905) said that “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”. One way to predict the future is by looking at the present and extrapolates it although it doesn’t always work. In today’s world, things can happen quickly. There are many different factors that influence criminal activities. It has been stated that recent crime happens between “losers” in society. “Losers” in this case are referring to young males, both unskilled and uneducated. They may be expected to direct their frustration internally, engaging in one or more of a variety of self-destructive behaviors, or outwardly, in the form of interpersonal violence.

Legal definitions of hate crimes vary. The federal hate crimes statistics act of 1990 (public law 102-275 April 23, 1990) encourages states to report hate crimes to the federal bureau of investigation (FBI).
Police officers arriving on the scene should act immediately to secure the scene, stabilize victims, ensure safety of victim(s)/witnesses, preserve crime scene, conduct a preliminary investigation, and arrest perpetrators if probable cause exists. Police officers also try to understand the motive of the crime. With new van guards, officers often try to raise the perpetrators bail as high as they can to keep the individual in jail to prevent the crime from happening again by that individual.
Writing this paper informed more about hate crimes and what many victims and police officers go through. I understand that many police officers have their work cut out for them when it comes to everyday crime. When it comes to hate crimes, the police officer has to be more sensitive/aware. They have to get a better understanding of the situation and not jump to conclusions and try to figure out what exactly happened from the victim’s point of view. As far as new technology and punishment goes, police are working to bring the victim to justice. New technology such as automated lie detectors test brings more accuracy as far as truth to detect punishment in the case. It will never be easy when it comes to hate crime cases but after writing this paper I know that police/FBI agents are handling the situation to the best of their ability.
