Having a minute of break in his room, Steven Milford, Chief Manager of a small agricultural company, found himself feeling uncomfortable again. Everything seemed to be alright with the companys work, his team has been succeeding in total harmony and with enthusiasm, but something radically changed in the spirit of his young subordinates, something had faded away in their eyes, something that was hardly noticeable, but became quite disappointing for him. He could intuitively understand the reason, but what could he do? The company has been delivering herbicides and pesticides around the southern and middle regions of UK for about two years. This position was offered to Milford in his mid-30 after years of hard work as an ordinary distributor in one of competitive ventures, so he knew his Ps and Qs very well. He managed to gather a very effective team: all were young people from 22 to 27. Nicolas, 27, Sales Manager, was already in business for some years and had a great amount of contacts all around the region; he was very easy going and used to negotiate with important customers and arrange the transactions together with Steven. Two agronomists, Dave, 23, and Alex, 22, were delivering the goods to customers mostly around the Southern coast.
Alex was often in the office, helping Nicolas to deal with small farmers or coordinating the work of two other distributors in Birmingham and Manchester. Patrick, 23, was responsible for advertising and positioning of new brands. There were two young ladies: Eva, 22, who worked as an accountant, and Stella, 25, Stevens secretary and his right hand. Business was going very well. Due to good contacts of the owner of the company, Mr. Abdul Aziz, who resided in the Middle East, Steven could offer first-rate herbicides from famous producers like Du Pont or Novartis by relatively low prices.

Thats why firstly small, then large farmers began regularly placing orders. The company was receiving good awards and, having started with 4 people of staff, Steven enlarged his team up to 8. There was perfect emotional and psychological environment; young group had plenty of in common, they all were very helpful and responsible. It was obvious that they were gathering not only for work: how many times after working hours they had endless discussions or improvised little parties. Nicolas and Stella were the most respectable members of the group, ideological leaders and inspirators. And Steven felt incredible in this environment, he felt himself involved and equal to them, because everybody was opened to him and to all the others. But, as the company was growing successfully and increasing its sales, the amount of bookkeeping work started escalating and the owner advised Steven about the necessity to appoint one more accountant. Aziz wanted it to be qualified person, who could have long experience in accounting and guarantee calm relations with British governing structures.
Shortly, a new Chief Accountant, Scott MacGuinn, 49, was presented to the team. He looked a bit grim and sometimes was too much sarcastic, but demonstrated preciseness and accuracy in his work and they reached quite good accordance and understanding with Steven. But: something began changing with the whole group, something, that Steven could understand, but, being very busy with his business, had no time and opportunity to change. For some weeks there has been silence in the office after working hours, people were leaving as soon as they had finished their tasks. Theres no live exchange of the ideas or funny chats with a glass of drink anymore. Only MacGuinn is staying for long after work, trying to make calculations correspond. Recently Stella among other things said to Steven, that they feel awkward in his presence.
