As a student on a placement you must remember :- You are a representative of Tameside College and, more importantly, the Health and Social Development. Always try to be a strong, positive ambassador for the College. Always display professional behaviour. Confidentiality is extremely important. College and your placement will expect you to respect confidentiality at all times, even when your placement has finished. Always be punctual and make sure that your attendance is good. If you are going to be late or off sick please inform your placement supervisor.
It is also your responsibility to inform college of any absence. Make sure your dress code is smart and tidy. Please make sure your clothes are practical. Ensure your shoes are suitable and safe. Make sure you look clean, tidy and presentable. Please keep jewellery to a minimum. Please also tie your hair up if it is long. Acrylic nails or nail varnish are not suitable in a care environment. Always try and work as part of a team. The staff in your placements are always willing to offer support, advice and guidance. Listen carefully to staff and try and follow instructions carefully.
You will be expected to use your initiative, but you won’t be expected to remember everything on your first day. If you are unsure about anything please ask questions – and if you find it useful, take notes. Listen carefully to service users. Make sure you take your professional practice file with you each week. Show the file to the placement supervisor. You also need to discuss with the placement supervisor the activities that you need to carry out. Ensure that your log sheets and weekly summary sheets are signed regularly. If you have any issues, speak immediately to the placement supervisor.

Understand how to work in a safe, healthy and supportive working environment. Meet and get to know people who are working in your chosen profession and make the most of their knowledge and experience. Be able to see people carrying out the job that you think may be your chosen career. As the tutor/placement officer we will :- Maintain regular communication between the student, ourselves and the placement provider. Monitor the student’s progress whilst on placement.
