Health Care has always been a very controversial topic, not only in the United States but in the world as whole, but the questions some people may ask is what exactly is health care. The medical dictionary defines health care as the maintaining and restoration of health by the treatment and prevention of disease especially by trained and licensed professionals .Everyone, no matter the age, financial status , or depth of the sickness ,all citizens should have the opportunity to have healthcare.
The most talked about health care right now is referred to as Obama care or the Affordable Health Care Act. Obama Care was passed in the year 2010, but was not expected to go into effect until the year 2014. The purpose of Obama Care is to ensure that all citizens of the United States will have healthcare accessible, this will take the power of the well-being of United States citizens out of the power of the insurance companies and back in the hands of the people. There are over 44 million of middle and low income families without access to health care today because of their financial situations and the high prices of health insurance through the insurance company. With this healthcare plan, healthcare is not an option anymore. Under the Obama Care plan all Americans must have healthcare rather its private or federal. Citizens that do not have health care will be required to pay a tax that may increase over the years. Obama Care doesn’t create health insurance, it regulates private health insurance increasing the benefits, rights and protections offered by insurers.

Many may say, universal health care or health care for all citizens may sound good, but how will it affect our economy? The answer to this question is Obama Care or the Affordable Health care act is expected to cost the United States and estimated 1.1 trillion dollars over the next 10 years. That means that this health care act will still affect United States citizens almost 6 ½ years after President Barack Obama is out of office. Now although 1.1 trillion dollars sounds like a lot of money the point of Obama care is to help the United States rather than hurt it. The point of it is to save the US money by reducing the healthcare costs for Americans which will therefore reduce the deficit, but what if Obama care didn’t go into effect? How would not having Obama Care affect Americans? Studies show that over five hundred Americans die each week because of lack of having health insurance.
The argument is that the true effect of not having Obama Care does not really have to do with the economy it has to do with the health and well-being of the citizens of the United States of America. In order to pay for Obama Care , United States Citizens will have to pay an additional .9 percent tax on taxable income and a 3.8 percent increase on all capital gains .Obama Care will effect each group of people differently from small businesses , to big business and from small families to big families . Americans have until March, 31rst, 2014 to apply for health care in order to avoid being fined.
Just like any other controversial topic, The Affordable Health Care Act has both pros and cons. Some pros of the act are that Obama Care gives 30 of 44 million uninsured Americans access to health insurance. Children can now stay on their parents insurance until they reach the age of 26. With this act Medicare will be expanded and improved. With Obama care hospitals and doctors will now be rewarded on a quality over quantity manor. The better the services the more they will be rewarded. Affordable Health Care Act funds scholarships and loan repayment programs to assist young people with going to school for health care related professions. Families making less than $250,000 will see their taxes cut by hundreds of billions of dollars. Americans can no longer be denied due to their current or previous health conditions. Prescription medications will cost less because the so-called “doughnut hole” (the gap in payment for prescription drugs ) will decrease over time, until it is eliminated in 2020.

Some cons of the act are that it will hurt a small percent of small businesses , Small business with over 50 employees will have to either make their employees full time or pay fine . The tax will increase substantially to $325 (or 2 percent of income) in 2015, and $695 (or 2.5 percent of income) in 2016. It is estimated that 6 million people will pay the fine in the first year instead of purchasing insurance.

Under Obama care, 8 percent of legal U.S. residents will remain without health insurance in 2022, according to CBO. “If you’re one of the 30 million Americans who don’t yet have health insurance, starting in 2014, this law will offer you an array of quality, affordable, private health insurance plans to choose from,” said Obama.

As the CBO concludes, despite all the new government regulations and bureaucracies, taxes and subsidies created by Obama care, there will still be 30 million uninsured people in the United States a decade from now. There have been over 40 attempts by republicans to repeal the affordable healthcare act since January 2011. One repeal attempt was in 2013, . An amendment to the Senate budget resolution from Senator Ted Cruz failed on a 45- 54 vote. Cruz’s amendment would have repealed the Affordable Care Act and encouraged patient-centered reforms to reduce costs. Senate Republicans knew Cruz’s amendment was pointless, and knew it wouldn’t pass, but literally every GOP senator voted for it anyway – just because.
Throughout my research I have developed my own opinion on the subject of the Affordable Health Care Act. I feel that the motive behind the act was a great one. I am all for healthcare for all citizens. The fact that a person cannot be denied due to previous health problems is what made me pro Obama Care, but I feel that there should have been more power in the hands of the citizens. Many Americans are against the act due to the fact that they simply are confused about what it is . People see raise taxes and automatically are against it. When the truth is it only really raises taxes for higher earners which is a small percentage. I wish the government would have made sure Americans fully understood the act before passing it. This act focuses on the well-being of citizens more than the money it takes to do so. Regardless of the opinions of me or any other citizens the act will be in full effect by the end of this month , but I feel this act will end up having a positive impact on our economy rather than I negative one in the long run.
