Challenges that healthcare is facing is rising healthcare costs. There are many factors contributing to the rising costs of healthcare, but one in particular is the baby boomers. The baby boomers consists of those that were born during World War 2 and will be turning 65 years or older in 2010-2030.
The population of adults 65 and older totaled 40.3 million in 2010, which is expected to double by 2030. The older generation makes up 13.1 percent of the U.S population. Health care costs for individuals 65 and over in the U.S is three to five times greater than the costs for individuals over 65. In the United States, nursing homes and home health care expenditures doubled during 1990-2001, reaching $132 billion. Public programs such as Medicare and Medicaid paid 57% of the $132 billion. These numbers are expected to climb as older adults are living longer and needing more care (“Public Health and Aging: Trends In Aging”, 200).
“Health care utilization rates are important indicators of what general types of care specific populations seek, and they also indicate how services may be shifting from one site to another.
Despite major changes in the health care delivery system, the aging population, and managed care incentives, visits to physicians’ offices rates per 1,000 populations were relatively stable over the decade, neither increasing nor decreasing significantly through 1990–91 and 2000” (National Center for Health Statistics, 2001, p 20).
There are many health care trends and challenges that health care professionals are faced with daily. Although health care has come a long way three is still a long way to go. Everything from electronic filing, online to doctor visits are the newest trends to date. Also creating free healthcare (affordable healthcare act), has been one of the biggest challenges in health care, there was a lot of disagreeing about this act, there are some disadvantages to this healthcare. “The affordable health care act isn’t just about insurance coverage. The legislation is also about transforming the way healthcare is provided.” (Health Affairs 2014)
