health promotion as defined by World Health Organization (WHO), is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. It moves beyond a focus on individual behaviour towards a wide range of social and environmental interventions. (World Health Organization, n.d., expression 1) In the field of nursing, health promotion is vital in a way that nurses unlike the past where we only treat patients with illnesses; few of our focuses nowadays is the prevention of disease and improving the patient’s quality of life. This became essential due to numerous assessments, data gathering and the observation of the need of spreading knowledge in order to address today’s physical and mental issues. In reviewing several articles, the common purpose and goal of health promotion in nursing is the drive to motivate and educate individuals to seek for optimal health.
This is achieved through various methods of promoting health. Three levels of promotion are commonly used; primary level, secondary level, and tertiary level. In primary level, its purpose is the preventative approach to avoid illness prior to affecting individuals. This is achieved through various implementations. Educating individuals to promote a healthy lifestyle such as smoking cessation or avoidance can prevent the occurrence of diseases such as lung disorders, cardiac issues, and the possibility of having a stroke. An example of a primary level health promotion is a journal written by M. Tingen, J. Andrews, and A. Stevenson which is entitled Primary and Secondary tobacco prevention in Youth.

There are many factors that influence our health behaviours in relation to the four aspects of health. Some are simple whilst others are more complicated. According to Tingen, Andrews, and Stevenson (2009), The childhood years represent a critical time for tobacco experimentation and addiction. As one of the largest health care professions, nurses should seize the important opportunity of positively impacting the health of children and youth through comprehensive and effective primary and secondary tobacco prevention efforts. (Tingen et al., 2009, p. 1).
The article views nurses as having a significant impact in this health promotion. Their approach to prevention is addressing factors that contribute to the influence of tobacco used in youth. Various factors that contribute to smoking are media, cultural background, social norms, and intrapersonal influences such as low self-esteem, and peer pressure. As nurses have the opportunity to care for youth patients in various settings such as school, clinic and hospital; we are able to contribute and share knowledge about the effects of tobacco use and the complications that arise from it.
Examples of intervention that can be done in nursing are educational presentation at school and community, prescreening for youth with high risk of possible tobacco use, educational pamphlets being hand out at routine health visits to clinic, and educating patient’s family members that have history of tobacco use. With the implementation of these interventions, nurses can create an impact in the prevention of tobacco use, which can greatly reduce or prevent adverse health issues. In the secondary level of health promotion, the focus is the recognition of the disease and preventing it reoccurrence or alleviating its symptoms and prevention of further advance complications. Through screening of patients with an existing illness such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, we may be able to identify factors that may contribute to exacerbation of symptoms or even reduce the risk of complications.
The Essay on Family centered Care
Family-centered care Family-centered care is an approach to health care that respects the central role of the family in a persons life. It upholds the importance of the family as a partner on the health care team. An article by Thorbjorg Ingadottir and Helga Jonsdottir (2010) showed secondary health promotion resulting in a reduction of a patient’s hospital stay, admission rate, psychological complications due to health status, and use of tobacco related products. (Ingadottir & Ingadottir, 2010) In this article title Parnership-based Nursing Practice for People with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and their Families: Influences on Health-related Quality of Life and Hospital Admissions, their goal is to include the patient’s family in managing patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to improve patient’s quality of life. By including families in the implementation of care, the patient’s health status significantly improved thus resulting in fewer hospital admissions, improvement of psychological status and patient’s whole well being.
As nurses are able to communicate with the patient and their families, they can provide teaching and support that can further monitor the patient’s progress. Patient and families are assisted in learning to observe, assess and take the necessary measure in relation to patient’s symptoms. (Ingadottir & Ingadottir, 2010, p. 2797) By also having conversation and having a connection with the patient and his or her family members, nurses are able to identify their needs and include in the teaching and an individualized plan of care. In the tertiary level of health promotion, focus is based on the restoration of normal functions, minimizing effects of a disease through promotion of activities including therapy to prevent further complications and degeneracy. In nursing, the primary function is to provide resources to aid the individual to return to his or her community as a useful individual and maximize the patient’s capabilities.
This includes collaborating with different disciplines of health care such as physicians, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, case managers and social workers. In the article Exercise Promotion: Walking in Elders, tertiary prevention is focused on geriatric patient and patient with disabilities to increase physical abilities and exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle avoiding adverse complications. It stresses nursing as a key player in the multidisciplinary approach in the patient’s plan of care.

Along with nursing interventions mentioned, it also addresses nursing as a main factor to provide resource that can advocate interventions and plans to enhance an older individual’s quality of life. (Schoenfelder, 2010) The health promotions in nursing in different levels of prevention have a similar goal in mind. This is the to guide individuals in having a sense of control in their own health by guiding them through a healthier lifestyle in order to achieve an optimum quality of life. Nursing takes an important role in achieving this goal, as we are one of primary providers of knowledge.
