Ernest Hemingway’s “In Another Country” seems to have a very depressing tone. I think he chooses to write this way because this story is set in Italy during World War I and in this war, many lives were lost. Also, the main character is in a hospital where lots of people are dying and have died. It took me a while to realize what was going on because they were talking about sports and then there was a major and I thought that when you were talking about a major in the military it had to be capitalized, but that was my own mistake.
Still, this story seems to jump around from place to place, from talking about sports, to the major’s wife’s death, and then to how many medals each of them earned. It was quite confusing and even having read the story twice I don’t really know what the theme is. What the major, the doctor, and the other injured soldiers talked about the most were basically what they had lost. All these characters just came back to the hospital to talk about their losses. They all shared the fact that they had lost something and I think the theme must be loss and the way you deal with these losses.
“Big Two-Hearted River” is about a man, Nick, who seems like he just wants to get away from it all and have a nice camping trip. A train then proceeds to drop Nick off at some river that he had been to before. At this river he sets up camp and then goes to fly fish or does something like fly-fishing. While camping, Nick seems to be a lot more at peace and a lot more comfortable than what was described before. Hemingway’s writing seems to confuse me a lot more than the others. I think the theme of this short story ties into why Hemingway titled this piece “Big Two-Hearted River.” I guess Nick just really has to leave civilization and return to the river and do what he did before.

Nick somehow is rejuvenated after having been to the river. Now “The End of Something” was much more confusing than “Big Two-Hearted River.” I really don’t know what happened. First they were like “oh! It can’t be the same!” and then they go on a boat and they don’t talk and then they get on shore and then bill has a sandwich, I don’t know how this is happening. I assume that the main character went to war and then came back from war.
While he was at war, his wife / spouse /girlfriend stayed at home. Then, he came back and things just weren’t the same. The war had somehow changed everything and nothing was how it used to be. The theme of “The End of Something” must be change and how it affects relationships.
