For me writing anything is a worthwhile and helpful goal. During my junior year in high school, I was required to write a research paper for my extremely boring history class. We were giving the freedom to choose our topic but not the option to omit the assignment, like I would have loved to do. Using this freedom I opted to do a research paper on Three Mile Island. I assumed this would be an easy and interesting topic to research due to my previous knowledge and the close proximity of the nuclear power plant. In all honesty, I lacked the motivation to write such a long and useless research paper.
At the time I was unable to see the benefits of writing what I thought to be a worthless research paper. My preconception of the research paper was a paper filled with random facts from many different books. As I followed the guidelines my teacher provided for me, I quickly realized the inaccuracy in my preconceptions. During the writing process I became aware of how difficult it can be to combine many similar facts into my own words.
It was also difficult selecting important information from the vast amounts that I found during my research. At the time this assignment appeared to be nothing more than busy work. After many long hours, a six-page research paper, and some sincere reflection, I have concluded that the assignment was beneficial. Through writing the paper I learned many new interesting facts. I also improved my writing skills while enhancing my knowledge..
