Herat University
Herat University, as one of the governmental organizations of Higher Education in Afghanistan, was inaugurated in 1988 due to the highly request of open minded and educated people resuming with faculty of Literature & Humanities.
Presently, it is about 18 years that this institute is working in academic affairs and it graduated about 1249 specialists that now servicing the community.
Herat University in this short time can publish eleven Faculties, more than 37 Departments, 210 teachers, more than 6000 students. And can Expert more than 2385 students up to 2006. In 2006, about 6000 students were enrolled in Herat University in different faculties that 71 percent of them were male and 29 percent were female students. However, during the Taliban regime, there was no chance for females to study but still we have 35% female students and we hope to increase the number of our female students in next years.
Herat University was baring during the regime of Taliban and loss many academic people and all women.
After the Taliban regime on 2002, Herat University tried to make a new structure and in the first step inaugurated the new complex of university. It is about four years that the construction of the new complex of university is going on but due to having no budget the work was suspended temporary. Recently, according to the decision of the government, the complex of university has gone to the development projects of the government and its construction is started again, and it is expected that the construction of the complex be finished in next four years.

This university as an official institute of higher education in the western region is located in Herat City, covering Herat, Badghis, Ghor, Farah and Nimroz Provinces. The new university of Herat City is located in north side of Herat in southern main road of Herat and Torqoundy high ways in front of old military place Qolordoh and about 5 km far from the center of Herat City.
At the present Herat University is in its good condition. It has five buildings and three under construction occupying 132 acre. Apart from five ones constructed buildings, three are in use, one of which directorate, and the others are for Literature, Engineering, Science, Art, Agriculture, and teacher training faculties. There are almost 5777 students studying in eleven faculties, but they are not all in one campus because the campus is still under construction. There are almost 223 professors and credit system is the teaching method. The relationship between teachers and students is educational. The buildings those are constructed have good facility such as heaters, electricity, and etc. The university is supported by USAID. As an official said the security is taken by police commissioners. The university is accredited to American and German universities. The most important thing which should be mentioned is the 10 teachers and around 20 students have sent to foreign countries for higher education.

The University is well-facilitated with internet, transportation, library, well equipped classes, and it provides scholarships for teachers and students. Using internet is very important and it has provided by USAID organization to Herat University. All the students they use from the internet in regular hours. The stipendiaries of Herat University have done an effective measures and they wanted to have educated and professional students, so they provided the facility of library. Now all the students can do much research in the library. For transferring of its students especially for girls it has started the transportation system. Offering scholarships is another improvement of this university which provide for its teachers and students. After they passed the test successfully the will send. A big problem that all the students face with is lack of water.
In the future Herat University is trying to establish a good communication with the foreign organizations and use the scholarships, books, stationery, and laboratory in different fields.
I hope that Herat University could improve as a scientific position to provide the best facilities for its students in the future.
