YAHOO. COM 3/30/03 Faced with soaring insurance premiums, some nursing homes in Washington have dropped their liability coverage for incidents ranging from simple mishaps to the abuse or death of a resident. At least 30 skilled nursing facilities across the state are “going bare”, industry jargon for operating without an insurance safety net, said the president of an organization that represents most of Washington’s 270 nursing homes. Neither the state nor the federal government requires liability insurance for nursing homes.
Most of the uninsured nursing homes canceled their policies at the beginning of the year rather than pay premiums that have increased more than fivefold in some cases. Most of these insurance companies do not care about the people; they only care about how much they would make out it. Most of these nursing homes are for elderly people who have retired from work. They cannot provide for themselves. It is government’s responsibility to make sure that these people get the entire medical needs they deserve. They should make sure that most of these insurance companies make their rate affordable, most importantly for the old people..
