The High Renaissance was the culmination of the artistic revolution of the Early Renaissance, and one of the great explosions of creative genius in history. (1).
During the Renaissance there were many drastic changes in the style of art. Giotto was a very influential painter, during the start of the Renaissance. In Giotto’s work he used three dimensional images; this was a drastic change from the classic art where depth was not used. His paintings were very realistic and life like, unlike the previous centuries art.
Giotto’s work inspired artists by the likes of Leonardo de Vinci, and Michelangelo. Leonardo Da Vinci came to Rome in 1513, he was sixty-one. (2) Leonardo was a skilled artist, that painted many wonderful pictures that are known today. (3) Some of his most famous pictures that he painted is the, “Last Supper”, and the “Mona Lisa.” The “Mona Lisa” was a painting that Leonardo Da Vinci had painted, when he took time off to paint, when he was painting another picture called “The Battle of Anghiari”, which was completely destroyed.
What had happened was Leonardo Da Vinci was offered a piece of Marble to carve a statue out of it, he declined. Another young sculptor by the name of Michelangelo Buonarroti had accepted the job. After working for awhile, Michelangelo was done with his masterpiece. When it was done the City Councilors invited all of the Florentine artists to view the new work. Among one of them was Leonardo. When it was revealed, everyone was astonished.
The Essay on "To S.M., A Young African Painter On Seeing His Works" By Phyllis Wheatley
The poem “To S.M., a Young African Painter On Seeing His Works” by Phyllis Wheatley, is one that contains angelic details and description. Upon seeing this young artist’s work, Wheatley was so moved that she wrote this poem. She makes this clear in line five by saying, “How did those prospects give my soul delight.” Then Wheatley follows this line with, “A new ...
(4) It was the best sculpture they had seen. (4) It was David of the Bible story. People were calling this sculpture “The Giant.” Leonardo Da Vinci wanted some of the fame so he wanted to paint the picture of “The Battle of Anghiari.” While he was making cartoons of this picture to later paint it on the wall, the City Councilors gave a part of Leonardo’s portion of the wall to Michelangelo. It made Leonardo Da Vinci worry a little but he wasn’t too worried because he had a special way of painting that would make all his colors bright, which he thought Michelangelo would never be able to match. (5) After all this, Leonardo Da Vinci painted his painting but at the end, with his style, the painting was left sticky so he brought in a flame to heat the paint to dry it. While he was doing this all of the paint and work he had done melted and loosened, and all of the colors mixed.
Again Michelangelo was the great one that painted the picture and Leonardo went into hiding. The “Mona Lisa” was discovered after all this. Another wonderful painting was the, “The Last Super.” (6) This picture was excellent because it had human personality, and it gave the picture its power and originality. (6) The faces had expressions on them, which made it realistic. It was a fresco painting on the wall of a monastery in Milan, and it showed Jesus breaking bread with his twelve apostles the night before his betrayal.
(7).
In the picture you can see the apostles on either side of Jesus leaning forward, throwing up their hands, pointing, falling back in dismay, and searching one another’s faces. (8).
After this painting many tried to repeat it, but the expressions on the faces and the body made it difficult to do so (9).
Once again Leonardo had painted a masterpiece that people would admire. (10) When Leonardo Da Vinci past away, Francis, the French king, said “no other man had been born who knew as much as Leonardo.” (11).
