The novel “Holes” was written by Louis Sachar. This book is about a boy Stanley Yelnats who happened to
be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Stanley got taken to court for something he never done. Stanley
then has a chioce to go to jail or to go to Camp Green Lake, of course Stanley chioces Camp Green Lake.
Camp Green Lake is nothing like his imagination though. Stanley knows that his family is cursed thanks to
his “no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather.” At Camp Green Lake the boys have to
dig holes 5 by 5. They all get told its for charactor building but soon Stanley realises its more than that.
There are many charactors in this book but i would say, Stanley and Zero are the main charactors. Stanley
and Zero become good friends thoughout the book.
At the start of the book it tells you about Stanleys great-great-grandfather who had started the curse.
Elya Yelnats, Stanleys great-great-grandfather, was in love with a girl but knew he wouldnt be able to give
her father a fatter pig in exchange for his daughters heart. Elya then meets a gypsi called Madame Zeroni
who gave him a piglit and clear instructions on what to do. Elya had to carry the piglit up a mountain
everyday and let it drink from the fresh water. Then after gifting the piglit to the Father he had to carry
Madame Zeroni up the hill. After the girl chooses not to marry him he gets on a boat to America

forgetting all about the promise to Madame Zeroni. This caused the curse for generations to come. The
curse came along to Stanley Yelnats who always happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Stanley is over-weight and doesnt have friends at school. He gets bullied. When he was walking home from
school one day a famous baseball players shoes fell from the sky and hut him on the head. Stanley then
got tooken to court and though his story was true the judge didn’t believe him. He got the chioce to
either go to Jail or go to Camp Green Lake. He choose Camp Green Lake because his family was poor and
he had never been to a camp before, But Camp Green Lake was different it had no lake or anything green.
When Stalney arrived he got told he had to dig a hole everyday. It had to be 5 by 5. As the weeks go by
Stanley grows stronger and tougher as he battles the harsh conditions at the camp, digging in the desert
heat. He becomes good friends with a boy named Zero. This annoys the other boys in the camp and causes
a fight, Zero was really angry and hut one of the councillors in the head with a shovel. Everyone thinks
Zero wont be able to survive out in the desert without water and supplies so his records were distroyed.
Stanley then dicided to help his new friend Zero and attempts to steal a water truck to go out after Zero.
He drives the truck into a hole then gets out of the truck and runs away. He ran out across the desert
toward a rock that looked like “God’s thumb,” the place where his grandfather, the first Stanley Yelnats,
survived after being robbed by Kissin’ Kate Barlow. Kissin’ Kate Barlow became a outlaw after her husband
Sam was killed by the towns folk because he was black and she was white and they got caught kissing. Years
later, Trout Walker and his wife tried to force Kate to tell them where in the dried up lakebed she had
buried her treasure. Kate refused and died from being bitten by the fatal yellow-spotted lizard before any
treasure was found. When Stanley finds Zero, Zero is weak and unable to do anything. They then come

across a mountain, the same mountain that Elya had to climb. Stanley then carries Zero up the mountain
to the top to find wild onions and fruit. That day the curse was broken because Zero was related to the
Gypsi, Madame Zeroni. After a few days the boys have regained their strength and decide to go back to
the camp to try and dig up Kate Barlow’s treasure. Under cover of night, Stanley digs and unearths a
suitcase. Just as the Warden arrives. In the light of flashlights, the boys see that they are covered with
yellow-spotted lizards. They stay completely still until the sun comes up and the lizards go down into the
shade. Then the State Attorney General and a lawyer hired by Stanleys Dad arrived. The Warden tried to
claim the suitcase as her own, but Zero used his newly acquired reading skills and finds the name Stanley
Yelnats on the side if the suitcase. The Attorney General and the lawyer take Stanley away but Stanley
refuses to leave without Zero. There was no longer any records to keep him there. So Zero is released with
Stanley.
I think the theme to this story, is that ever though Stanley was at the wrong place at the wrong time, it
could actually mean he was at the right place at the right time. Maybe the cionsadences weren’t
coinsadences, if Stanley wasn’t walking home then the shoes might have not hut him meaning he
wouldn’t get to Camp Green Lake and discover the treasure or the friendship of Zero and break the curse.
I think this is a good book. It gets you thinking about the things you wouldn’t normally think about.
Like what if things happen for a reason even if they are bad? i really liked this book because it was full of
twists and turns that was unexpected and I never seen coming. This book really got me thinking about the
things in life and wether things actually are what they seem. Stanley had faced alot of bad luck in his life
but if the bad luck never happened he wouldn’t have gotten the curse broken and a curse free life after.
