Sexual role in horror stories There are many horror stories out there, most of them having some sort of sexual content or sexual meaning implied to the story. The writers do this intentionally. Writers do this to attract the readers into their horror stories because the readers are mostly teenagers who are going through puberty and are experiencing sexual urges. Most all horror stories involve some sort of creature, a male figure, attacking a female. Walter Evans explains “Various aspects of the monster’s attack are clearly sexual. The monster invariably prefers to attack individuals of the opposite sex, to attack them at night and to attack them in their beds.” (503) Analyzing the horror stories carefully, there is an implied meaning of sexual content.
Yes the attack from the monster is scary, but they mostly attack females, who are at greater risk and the attacks and encounters with the monsters add to the thrill of watching or reading horror stories. Also, Evans explains “The effects of the attack may be directly related to adolescent sexual experimentation… Many formulaic elements of the monster movies have affinities with two central features of adolescent sexuality, masturbation and menstruation” (504).
Monsters in horror stories often change themselves from a human being to monster and vise versa.
The Essay on Conquering The Monster From Within
In the poem Beowulf, there are many monsters that are slayed by the hero. Like in the poem, many monsters exist in our world today. One of the monsters that attack people is a negative attitude. This monster attacks numerous people everyday, limiting their potential to succeed. However, there is a hero who battles this monster everyday. This hero is my swim coach, Jim Keogh. Coach Keogh fights off ...
For example, a Wolfman turns from being a human to a Wolf at the full moon and attacks women and children who are more vulnerable. Evans says “the vampire’s bloodletting of women who suddenly enter full sexuality, the werewolf’s bloody attacks-which occur regularly every month-are certainly related to the menstrual cycle which suddenly and mysteriously commands the body of every adolescent girl” (504).
This symbolizes a girl going through a puberty period where she is going through changes throughout her body. When a monster attacks women, it shows sexual encounters between the monster and women. A monster attack only happens at the end of the month coinciding with menstrual cycle of an adolescent girl. In conclusion, horror stories are interesting to read because they stimulate our senses and imaginations and they have hidden sexual meaning within the story that makes it even more interesting to read.
Personally, I enjoy reading horror stories because of their intense level of fear and sexuality in the story.
