To inform the audience of the workings of the Houston Food Bank and the concepts discussed during the course which were demonstrated through our volunteer experience. The Houston Food Bank’s mission has been to lead the fight against hunger since 1982. * The Houston food bank is a non- profit organization that seeks food donations and distributes them at local charitable programs. * 95 cents of every dollar is used to feed the hungry. * The organization is a certified member of Feeding America.
During our volunteer efforts, there were a few communication concepts that were identified including: * Schemas empathetic listening * Group Task Roles Today, we would like to inform you about the communication concepts recognized during our volunteer experience. (Transition) Let’s begin with our actual volunteering experience and how we were able to help the Houston Food Bank. Each member of the group was able to volunteer at least 2 hours at the Houston Food Bank. We had two tasks to accomplish: 1) Sorting donated food in order to be distributed to different charitable programs and local food pantries. * On-site storeroom housed tons of food donated by ndividuals and organizational groups. * A food inventory list was provided for each destination’s ‘care package’ to be created. 2) Putting together packages to be mailed to previous donators seeking additional contributions including: * Volunteer hours * Cash donation * Food donation (Transition) It was effortless to help the food bank because of the passion each of us has towards volunteer work and what this opportunity meant to us individually. A) It involves listening to people with a sense of compassion, sincerity, and concernment. * With the statistics presented earlier on the percentage of families that are hungry but still have homes, it really touched me in the way that a hungry person could be someone that I know or care about. B) Among the benefits, empathetic listening builds: * Builds trust and respect * Enables the disputants to release their emotions, Reduces tensions * Encourages the surfacing of information, and * Creates a safe environment that is conducive to collaborative problem solving.

These were all proven by the group members when the director shared with us that she was once part of a family who looked to a food bank for help. This created the passion and motivation for her to stand behind a worthy cause such as this one. (Transition) Being that there were multiple people in the volunteer efforts at the Houston Food Bank, naturally, roles were formed in order to achieve our objective. ) Task roles are defined by a task that needs doing, and a person is asked or appointed to fill it. While putting together packages to be sent out for donations, we came up with a solution for us to work more efficiently given the time we were given to do as many as possible. * * We set up a sort of assembly line where one person was putting all of the pieces of information together, and the others stuffing the envelopes and making sure the addresses were properly exposed.
B) The warehouse where the nonperishable food is stored in is over 200,000 square feet with food stretched from wall to wall. We wanted to utilize our time as much as possible so we were able to team up with some volunteers to create a game of who could create the most packages. Everyone was able to hold one of the following roles * Director- Person with food list that informed the collector where to go to gather food. * Collector- Received direction on what part of the warehouse to collect the food from. Distributor- Peron who would receive the food from the collector and would separate it based on the selected items and quantities expressed on the list. When stepping into this task, there was a natural sense of hesitance that was formed by our apparent differences and formed stereotypes. Once we were able to get an inside view of what went on in a food bank as well as the joyfulness that they exude in order to keep the morale of the people they come in contact with, our speculations vanished.
