How and why critics perceived Satan as a hero in John Milton’s Paradise Lost. Satan is seen as the anti hero by the literary critics. He opposes God whom he believes as tyrannical. Satan was born as an angel .However; his thirst for supremacy made him an anti god. Satan is seen as a rebellious son who wants to be free from a puritan father. He allures all to be with him.
As a result, number of his followers grows up. Satan is credited with creation of life because he allures adam and eve to eat forbidden fruit. However, his misdemeanor results in creativity. Noted literary critic, Christopher Ricks believes that despite of his sacrifice; Satan got nothing but was condemned to hell with his followers. According to him, Satan is humiliated by circumstances. First Jesus became King of heaven and drives him to hell.
Then Adam out did him as Satan because he broke the divine instruction. He further elaborates that it is because of satanic influence that adam displays superhuman qualities. Another literary critic Anne ferry also points out that despite of being banished from the heaven, adam and eve got the real heaven. According to her, Milton was gifted with a rare sight to judge human emotions. He knew adam and eve sinned but they still got the best She strongly believes that they got more than they lost. It must be accepted that Satan paved a way for them to create a new world.
