Bilbo Baggins, the protagonist of the novel, was one of the many heroes of the quest because he had many of the characteristics that made him a hero, such as his courage and intelligence. Bilbo Baggins wasn’t the only hero of the novel, but he could be considered the most important thanks to the heroic actions that he made through the adventure. First, we are going to begin defining what a hero is and why Bilbo could be considered a hero.
Then we are going to mention the others heroes of the novel and the heroic actions that Bilbo made throughout the novel. Firstly, heroes are, according to Wikipedia, “…characters who, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness, display courage and the will for self-sacrifice, that is, heroism—for some greater good of all humanity,” however according to Word Reference dictionary a hero is, “a person, typically a man, who is admired for their courage or outstanding achievements. ” Both sources coincide that a hero needs to be brave.

A hero also needs to be smart, strong, lucky and most of the times had an extra ability that made him especial or superior from the other people or in this case characters. A hero is not only superior in physical aspects and personality characteristics. A hero also had values and interests that the others don’t have. Now that we already saw the characteristics that made a hero and Bilbo fulfills many of these characteristics. He was brave, smart, lucky, had an extra ability and he would give his life for his friends.
At the beginning Bilbo Baggins wasn’t brave, but during the quest he became brave. He wasn’t strong, but instead he had other good abilities such as his stealth and his size, that were useful when he needed to go unnoticed. Bilbo had many good ideas because when the dwarves didn’t know what to do next, he always had the correct answer and save them from the dangerous situations. Bilbo was very lucky because when he was lost on the goblins’ caves he found a mysterious and magic ring that made him invisible.
This ring helped him a lot because with it he could escape from many dangerous events that occurred during the novel. He risked his life many times to save his friends. Bilbo Baggins wasn’t the only one that had characteristics of a hero other characters also had them. Now, were a going to mention the other heroes of the novel. In contrast, others characters that had heroic characteristics were Gandalf, Bard, and Beorn. These were also heroes because each one had characteristics that meet the description of a hero’s personality.
Gandalf, a wizard that encouraged Bilbo in his quest, was a hero in the novel because he was very brave, smart, and he was a wizard. Gandalf proved his courage many times during the novel. The first action was when Bilbo and the dwarves were captured by the trolls and Gandalf smartly decided to distract them until the sun arrived and turned them into stone. He also guided the dwarves to the exit of the goblin’s cave. Gandalf “super power” or special ability was that he was a wizard and he could throw a spell if they were in problems.
Bard, the dragon assassin, was also a hero because he showed a great courage when stayed in Esgaroth while Smaug was attacking it, as can be seen in the next passage: [Everyone already escaped]But there was still a company of archers that held their ground among the burning houses. Their captain was Bard, grim-voiced and grim-faced, whose friends had accused him of prophesying floods and poisoned fish, though they knew his worth and courage. (…)Now he shot with a great yew bow, till all his arrows but one were spent. The flames were near him. His companions were leaving him. He bent his bow for the last time. Tolkien 250) Bard also was very strong and smart. Beorn, a man that changed of form and helped Bilbo on the outskirts of Mirkwood, was also a hero in the novel because he was strong, brave, and it the last battle against the goblins he went and save Bilbo, the dwarves, the elves, and Gandalf. He arrived as a bear and started killing almost all the goblins and gaining more minutes of life to the dwarves. We can see his fierceness in the next passage, “The roar of his voice was like drums and guns; and he tossed wolves and goblins from his path like straws and feathers. ” (Tolkien 291).

In addition, Bilbo made many heroic actions that made us consider him a hero. The heroic actions that he made always had a purpose and a consequence. Some of these actions were when Bilbo decided to went to the Elven king’s Halls to save the dwarves. He achieved the rescue with a very smart plan and they continue their adventure. Another heroic action that Bilbo made was when all the dwarves were captured by the Spiders in Mirkwood. He searched and rescued them. In both occasions he risked his life because he didn? t want to lose his friends and he couldn’t permit the quest to end like that.
The last heroic action that he made was when he went to the humans’ and elves’ camp to give them the Arkestone, a very important gem for the dwarves, to permit them deal the peace. He risked his life and betrayed Thorin’s trust to try to avoid the war between them. Bilbo’s purpose always was for the benefit of everyone and not for his own benefit, and this, he acted like a most valuable hero. In fact, Bilbo Baggins was one of the most important heroes of the novel because he sacrificed his life for his friend’s life. He was very smart and always solved the dwarves’ problems.
