Every time I hear about world news, it always tends to have to do with a country’s wealth, health, and social status. But what really defines these countries as wealthier? What are the things that gives someone in America a better life than someone in Africa? These factors can range from some qualities like GDP, Urbanization, Life Expectancy, Per Capita Income, and Fertility Rates among other countries. These Indicators allow people to classify a country to one of three levels of development; less developed, newly industrialized, or more developed.
The demographic indicators that geographers use are varied and encompass a variety of themes, everything from individual cell phone usage to Gross Domestic product. The following are a list of indicator definitions and their sources that will be used in this paper. Gross Domestic Product (GDP): Total amount of goods and services produced in a country in a given year. (CIA World Fact Book) Per Capita Income: GDP divided by total population equals average income per person. (CIA Fact Book) Urban Population: Number of people that reside in cities.
(World Health Organization) Global Fertility Rates: The number of children a woman is expected to have in a lifetime. The Term Paper on Critical analysis of Good Country People by Flannery O’ Connor
Good Country People is one of the most sought after works of Flannery O’ Connor. It is said to be the biography of O’Connor but she never claimed it to be such. (Freedom House, http://www. freedomhouse. org/report-types/freedom-world) Less Developed Nations: Low/Little economic development and industrialization. Recently Industrialized Countries: Medium/Mixed economic development and industrialization More Developed Countries: High economic development and industrialization Geographers use this data to help them assign countries to one of the three levels of development. One of the first indicators of a country’s level of development is economic factors.
These economic factors can be used by GDP, Per Capita Income, Urban Population, and many other elements. Information on the document GDP and Per Capita Income show that the higher GDP and Per Capita Income in a country equates to a higher level of development. For example, the graphs show that the U. S. has a GDP/Per Capita Income of $46,400. This can easily be classified as a high level of development. On the other hand, there is Hati, who has a GDP/Per Capita Income of $1,300 putting them in the lowest level of development.
Finally, there is the country of India, that is classified with a GDP and Per Capita Income of $3,100 putting it in the Newly Industrialized level of development. All of these countries show the same pattern in the graphs that are in Urban Population. But money isn’t way to classify the level of development for a country. Another equally important indicator of these levels of development are social traits. These social indicators are Global Fertility Rates, Life Expectancy, and the number of physicians per 1000 people.
On the Global Fertility Rates map, it shows a large majority of Africa having a very high fertility rate at about 5 children per woman. This is because of the lack of birth control and other types of contraception. Consequently, this causes less jobs available for working people, then lowering Africa’s level of development even more. This differs from the U. S. greatly whose fertility rat sits at less than 2 children per woman. This also connects to life expectancy and physicians per 1000 people.

The life expectancy of people is based on the medical care available in a country. The U. S. has a life expectancy of 78 with 256 physicians per 1000 people. This shows, the more physicians per 1000 people, the higher the life expectancy. Thus giving the country a higher level of development and quality of life. The last trait that determines a country’s level of development is freedom. The freedom availability for each country caries on the governmental system it has.
For example, nations under a communist system limits the rights that people have compared to a capitalist nation that has more freedoms. This then easily shows that it’s either more, less, or newly developed. All these factors show how geographers use them to classify a country’s level of development, being either highly development, newly developed, or low development. So now you see how all types of countries differ, you can realize how much you have living in a highly developed country.
