The Russo – Japanese war did is seen as a short term factor that was responsible for the 1905 revolution, however there are many other short term and long term factors which also contribute to being responsible for the 1905 revolution. The way the Tsar ran the country, social problems, changing society inside and outside Russia, Bloody Sunday etc… The Russo – Japanese war saw Russia lose to Japan. Russia saw itself as a great and powerful country, compared to others, Russia wanted to expand it empire over the Far East. Russia and Japan went to war over the control of China and Korea.
Russia saw its military as superior; however Russia suffered a humiliating defeat. January 1905 Russia was forced to surrender their Port Arthur Naval base to North China, months after that Japanese forces defeated the Russian army in Manchuria. On the 27th May 1905, the Russian Baltic fleet had sailed almost halfway round the world; they lost 25 out of its 35 warships. The defeat was a national humiliation for Russia and the Tsar. The defeat angered people, the Tsar and the country looked weak, and people grew a lack of respect for the Tsar.
This led to people wanting change to the way the country is run, by bringing in Democracy, and a change in society, by Russia going through the industrial revolution. The Russo – Japanese war can not be seen as the only factor responsible for the 1905 revolution. Bloody Sunday can be seen as another short term factor that was responsible for the 1905 revolution. January 1905 Father Gapon led a peaceful demonstration to the gates of the Tsar’s winter palace. The guards at the palace opened fire on the demonstrators under the orders of the Duma.
The Essay on Russia Revolution
The Russia Revolution was a true political revolution. By this I mean there was a fundamental change in the way leaders came into power and in the goals for the country. In theory, leadership changed from a monarchy to socialism. The goals for the country changed from ownership and control of wealth was by few to control by the proletariat (the workers). In reality the change of leadership and the ...
Nearly 200 women, children and men were killed at the gates; the majority of the demonstrators were peasants. The peasants saw the Tsar as the Father of Russia, so they went to Tsar with a petition for living conditions, working conditions, pay, food etc… After Bloody Sunday many of the surviving demonstrators were expelled from St Peterburg. This spread outrage over Russia, people began to question the Tsar’s authority and reluctance to face change. Sympathetic Strikes occurred in many parts of the Russian Empire. People no longer trusted the Tsar and the government, people in Russia knew that it was time for change after the ffects of Bloody Sunday; a revolution seemed to dominate people thoughts. Social and economic problems can be seen as a long term factor for the 1905 revolution. Round 80% of the population was either working class or peasants most lived in appalling conditions or many staved daily. The Russian population was growing quickly in 1885 the population was 98 million by 1905 it was 125 million. Russia was still a backward country compared to the rest of Europe, all other countries had gone through the Industrial revolution, where as Russia was still in the medieval period with society, life and work.
Peasants began to react to these problems through violent demonstrations known as jacqueries; peasants began to attack government officials, they destroyed government documents on landholdings, by early 1905 the Russian country side was close to revolution. However Russia began to go through an economic bomb under the changes from the finance minister Witte, Russia was quickly industrializing. However Moscow and St Petersburg saw a rise in peasants due to peasants moving from the farms to the cities to find work in factories.
This led to a growth in the population, leading to poor living conditions in cramped slums, life was worse in the cities than the country. The problems caused by the economy and social way’s made people form groups e. g. workers union which began to develop ideas for a revolution, they demanded for political change and captured a willing audience within the working society. The political problems are seen as a long term problem; political problems can also be seen as being as a main factor that was responsible for the 1905 revolution.
The Essay on Industrial Revolution Hamilton Alexander People
The Industrial Revolution had a major impact (both positive and negative) on the economic, political, social and cultural life in America, changing it from an agrarian (agricultural) and cottage (small specialized) society which was Thomas Jefferson's vision to a modern advanced and technological society which are Alexander Hamilton's vision. Russia was still an autocracy, all power rested with the Tsar. Other major European states were a democracy and had an elected parliament that spoke and worked for the people. Political groups began to form, the Social Revolutionaries were founded in 1901, they were willing to use violence to achieve a change in Russia, from 1901 – 1905 the Social Revolutionaries were responsible for over two thousand assassinations, one being the Tsar’s Uncle, Grand Duke Sergei the governor-general of Moscow.
The Social Democrats were another influential political group, formed in 1898 they two were also willing to use violent methods to achieve their revolutionary aims. The Social Democrats wanted to turn society around and give power to the workers and peasants of the land. By 1905 the Social Democrats has split into two groups, the Bolsheviks and Mensheviks. All these political groups began to educate the country on revolutionary change, how other countries were richer and more powerful, how they needed change if they wanted a better life.
After Bloody Sunday many people in the country began to listen to the political groups, as they knew that it was time to remove the Tsar and begin progressing towards a revolution and democracy. In conclusion the Russo – Japanese of 1904 – 1905 was responsible for the outbreak of the 1905 revolution to a certain extent, the humiliating defeat and lack of leadership created opposition for the Tsar. However there were many other factors that contributed to the 1905 revolution, Bloody Sunday, the murder of innocent people who only wanted help.
Social and economic problems, people growing tiered of living in poor conditions, and political problems, the uprising of influential political groups. I would argue that Bloody Sunday was the main factor was responsible for the 1905 revolution; the demonstration had built up from social and economic problems, and the way the government and the Tsar dealt with it caused a public outrage. Events steamed of from Bloody Sunday, sympathy strikes, peasant’s revolt, assassinations. These factors make it clear that Bloody Sunday was therefore the factor responsible for the 1905 revolution.
