Technology has contributed to change in the everyday life of Australians in the 1950s by inventing new types of transport. In the 1950s Australia made their first motor car, aircraft became faster and was able to carry more passengers and diesel locomotive trains became available in Australia instead of steam trains. Changes in Australia’s transport technology can mean there will be more deaths caused by transport and more traffic on the roads.

Transport has changed the everyday life of Australians in the 1950s with the contribution of technology by creating the first motorcar, the FX Holden. The FX Holden was factory-made in 1948, originally, the Holden factory could only produce 10 cars per day, but by 1951 it had increased to 100 cars per day. In 1953, Holden released the FJ Holden. It cost $2015, which was equal to 68 times the average weekly wage. By 1955, on average there were 1 850 000 cars in Australia. Since there were a lot more cars in Australia people started building garages and carports and there was a huge amount of new roads built and supermarkets built car parks for people to park in. with the motor car Australians could now go where they wanted, whenever they wanted, they usually went to the beach, sporting place and the shops, it was also easier to keep in touch with friends who lives far away, cars became a symbol of wealth for many families. The impact of technology in the 1950s on transport can be seen in source A. Source A, a photo of the Prime minister in the 1950s, Ben Chifley at the launch of the first Holden car in 1948 shows the first motorcar and people were very happy and excited to have their own car. It also shows that the “Australian dream” is slowly happening to have a house car and kids and the governments post war reconstruction plan is going well. Now that Australia had their own car it changed the way people lived because families were starting to build their houses away from railways and public transport. The iceman, the woodman and the fisho didn’t need to come to houses as much anymore as people just drove to the supermarkets and parked in their car parks. In the middle of the 1950s families started driving on the highways and going away on holidays, they would stay in a motel or hotel and go to drive in bottle shops.

Technology in transport has changed the everyday life of an Australian in the 1950s by creating a jet-powered aircraft that can fly faster and carry more passengers. Air travel was not common in the 1950s as they ran off propellers, it was bumpy and noisy, the planes could not fly at very high elevations, and they were longs trips with numerous stops to refuel. It only became common when Qantas bought a Boeing 707 jet-powered aircraft, these jets could reach fly higher and fly above stormy weather. In 1958, Qantas was the first airline ever all around the world to introduce a regular round-the-world service. In 1959, Qantas also had regular flights to America, London via New York and London via India. The impact of technology in the 1950s on transport can be seen in source B. Source B, a photo of the first Qantas 707-138 jet Sydney in June 1959, shows us how popular aircraft is becoming ever since the Qantas 707 was brought and sea travel to and from Australia was declining.

Technology did affect the development of transport for Australians in the 1950s by creating the first motorcar the FX Holden and also creating the first jet aircraft the Qantas Boeing 707. People no longer took public transport and steam trains and sea travel became less popular. Australian families started doing more leisure activities such as going to the beach, park, sporting grounds and going on more holidays. Technology has helped Australians enter the reconstruction period and live the “Australian dream”.
