Theodore Roosevelt was important in the development of American imperialism. The open door policy was aimed at keeping china free of colonial control and preserving free trade in china, however the collapse of imperial rule in china led to foreign interference. Another reason as to why Roosevelt was important in the development of American imperialism is that Roosevelt pushed through with the plans of the panama canal , which previous development had not been completed by the French. However Roosevelt pushed on his own terms that were favourable to America. This involved bringing a new county into existence called Panama, Roosevelt found it difficult to negotiate with the Columbian government but eventually they agreed, panama would basically be a puppet state in American control.

William Howard Taft became famous for dollar diplomacy which used American financial power to secure economic domination in Latin America and china. Taft used this diplomacy in the Caribbean state of Haiti American banks took over Haiti’s national debt and virtually ran the economy . This showed that America could keep a positive economy in not only their own country but others too. This showed that America was a world power and was ready for anything. This also showed that that they had some colonial control in these states. Overall I believe that Roosevelt was very important in the development of American imperialism as also he had no direct involvement in the dollar diplomacy he did choose Taft as his successor therefore having an indirect influence on the dollar diplomacy.
