Secrets to a successful night of drinking
By: Cameron Clark
Intro
We have all been there, feeling great one minute and horrible the next, drinking one too many can leave horrible memories sketched in us all. Drinking is a risky business and many of us take pleasure in walking the fine the line as a weekend ritual, a way to let go from the weekly stress we have built up. Even though drinking usually results in great memories of bonding and revealing personal secrets with strangers, sometimes we underestimate the power that the alcohol possesses and we find ourselves begging for mercy, face down in the closest toilet, if we’re lucky.
Keys to Success
Most of the reasons that we get sick from drinking can be easily adverted with a little planning and self control. The keys to a successful night of drinking starts hours before you’ve had your first sip of booze. The first and perhaps the most vital key is hydration. Before you begin to drink you should start hydrating yourself by drinking as much water as you can. Even once you have begun to drink it is vital to stay hydrated by alternating alcoholic beverages with water.
In conjunction with staying hydrated, what you eat before you begin to drink is also very important. The second key to a successful night of drinking is eating a full meal prior to consuming alcohol. The best foods to eat are not carbohydrates such as pasta like most people believe, you actually want to eat food with a lot of protein. Therefore you should eat meats like steak, chicken, or hamburger to get your protein dose in. Protein is important because alcohol breaks down all the proteins in your body so you need to consume extra protein before you drink. The food will also act like a sponge in your stomach and absorb a lot of the alcohol. Also it’s important to take some vitamin C to boost your immune system before drinking. You can get your vitamin C from orange juice, Airborne, or just a Vitamin C pill.

When you’re drinking it is important to know what it is your drinking because many bad drinking experiences arise from ignorance about the drink and its concentration. You should always check the alcohol percentage on the bottle and take into consideration how much you will be drinking. If you are at a party and drinking something premixed, take extra precautions because many mixes are made with Pure Grain Alcohol, or PGA which is very cheap and strong, 195 proof. The proof of the alcohol is twice the percentage of alcohol, therefore a bottle of rum liquor that is 35% alcohol by volume is said to be 70 proof.
Another important key to drinking is too keep track of how many drinks you have had. It is often easy to lose count or forget to keep track, but knowing how many drinks you’ve had is an excellent way to learn your limits and stay within your confines. A good method of counting drinks is too keep your beer caps in your pockets or measure your liquor in shot glasses before consuming.
As said earlier hydration is the most important aspect of a good night of drinking. After downing a few brews you start to get dehydrated and thirsty. The best way you can think to quench your thirst is to drink another beer but that just leads to an inevitable circle of doom. After you have had a few beers take a minute to grab some water and hydrate yourself. It will make you feel a lot better immediately and is the best way to prevent hangovers. That’s right all of your hangovers can be prevented by staying hydrated during the night.
