I Never Sang For My Father by Robert Anderson In the play I Never Sang For My Father by Robert Anderson the main characters are Gene and his father, Tom. The play develops around the conflict between these two characters, Gene and his dad are not close and argue all the time because of Tom’s attitude; he is selfish and considers himself to be the center of the universe. For example, Tom fell in love with his favorite program, so he forgot to entertain or give an attention to his son Gene. When Tom’s wife and Gene’s mother Margaret die, Gene and his father are at loss, they don’t know what to do so they argue again. Their love once is already to depart from the world.
Gene and his father are perfect characters to the start the conflict, because the son and the father are not close together. Gene’s father used to like Gene before. The climatic scene takes place during the conversation between Tom and Gene when they discuss Tom’s move. Gene suggests that his father should live with him so that he could take care of him. Tom is too proud to accept this offer, so he chooses to hurt his son by refusing to go and lived with him.
I think Tom is a sick and tired old man can neither deal with his own problems nor be considerate of his own son. After his father’s death, Gene realizes that even though his father was not perfect he still loved him.
