Students are rushing around Riverglen Junior High School completing last minute preparations. This is not the normal activity for a school on a Saturday. It is Idaho History Day. Idaho History Day 2000 is an exciting way for students, grades 4 through 12, to study history and learn about historical issues, ideas, people and events. It allows students to express what they have learned in history through creative and original performances, media presentations, papers, or three-dimensional exhibits.
During the 1999-2000 school year, National History Day invites students to research topics related to the theme. This year the theme was “Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, Events.” The scope is large enough to allow a wide range of topics through out history. This topic also caused students to take a deeper look into their past. This deeper look creates and environment for the students to apply critical thinking skills. Students are forced to ask serious questions about the topic they have selected. This is important for the student to understand the historical significance of their event. They must ask not only when the event took place, but also why they happened and how it affects history as a whole. Once the students gain an understanding of the event they must solve the question. How will they present their ideas? Students learn the techniques that historians around the world use to solve problems.
The Essay on Agganis Arena Level Event System
Agganis Arena The multi-purpose arena that I have chosen to evaluate is Boston University's Agganis Arena. This arena is considered to be the next generation of Boston sports and entertainment by incorporating the latest multimedia technologies and providing the finest possible sight lines and views of the action. The arena is located within Boston University's new $225 million John Hancock ...
This is a new level of problems solving skills to most students in the competition. Developing an understanding of the history is only one step, not enough to express what history is really about. The students must drive the presentation home with a strong conclusion. This conclusion must present how their topic affects individuals, communities, nations, and the world. The students gain much more then just academic skills. Many of the competitions require that the students get hands on experience with history. Performance based skills increase dramatically during the year. Idaho History Day allows the students to bury themselves in history. They learn the material so well many of them become that part of history.
Performance learning allows history to live with in the minds of these young historians. Overall, I was very impressed with the students that competed in the Idaho History day 2000. I had the privilege to watch the junior level performances. Many of these were astonishing. I was overwhelmed with the level of knowledge each of these students had of the subject area. I was proud to be a judge of such dedicated and enthusiastic children. I truly believe that if teachers bring history alive for their students the enthusiasm will grow.
