Impact of Globalization on Bengaluru
Impact of Globalization on Bengaluru
In the last two decades Globalization has been an integral part of India’s progress. One of the biggest impacts of globalization has been on IT (Information Technology) industry. IT industry flourished rapidly in India due to highly educated and literate workforce. Metropolis cities started developing at faster pace due to IT industry. Why Bengaluru?
Bengaluru, a fast growing metropolis, is a clean and spacious city with many magnificent structures having historic and modern architecture. It is known for its pleasant climate where temperatures remain moderate throughout the year. It is connected by road, rail and air to all major cities of the country and has direct international connections to many cities worldwide. The city has many well-recognized colleges and research institutions in India providing high qualified workforce. It has numerous heavy industries, software companies, aerospace, telecommunications and defense organizations. The city has a special sector developed called Electronic City- a hub of hi-tech firms. Booming Bengaluru
Today Bengaluru is the center of India’s IT industry, having back-offices of many foreign multinationals companies. Outsourcing companies like Infosys Technology and Wipro, have attracted worldwide attention with their global clients. Also there are many technology start-ups established in the recent years. These new firms are driven by the regions big pool of engineering graduates having expertise in new technologies. The City has positioned itself to help market the software industry. This is also why Bengaluru has been playing host to international-class conferences, workshops and exhibitions devoted to the software cause. (The New York Times, 2006). The IT services are providing young professional’s well-paid jobs. High salary jobs are encouraging youngsters to invest in new homes and cars. The IT jobs are very stressful and exhausting due to unrealistic timelines and to get away with this stress they prefer outings and weekend breaks. To facilitate these demands the number of resorts, restaurants and bars, excursion places and shopping malls have increased creating additional job opportunities for labor. IT companies for the ease of the employees provide transport facility, which facilitated the growth of private transportation business of taxis and buses. Along with IT services, infrastructure, transportation, entertainment and educational services have flourished. Thus, the IT boom has created opportunities for skilled as well as unskilled labor. Bengaluru has another service sector Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) developing which is providing opportunities for young fluent English speaking professionals. Infrastructure woes.
Despite the well-developed private sector in Bengaluru, the public infrastructure is still facing many flaws. The overcome frequent power failures companies need private power generators, poor road maintenance and huge vehicle flow are causing heavy traffic jams, and poor airport facilities are causing discomfort for international travellers. To cope with the increasing needs of private sector and provide better facilities for international market certain infrastructure changes are required. (BBC News, 2007).

Western influence and family
Today due to globalization India has developed economically, which in turn facilitated the progress of numerous families. Financially backward families got opportunities to grow at a faster pace. Most of the job opportunities are concentrated in cities like Bengaluru, which increased the number of migrants to the city. Indian culture focuses on joint family structure, but with the nature of work, families are forced to live separately generating nuclear family structure.
With the growing multinational companies in the city the western influence is easily seen in the market. To fit the job well, youngsters have changed their dressing style, language accent, food habits and living style. New Shopping malls are springing up in Bengaluru attracting Indians to western-style fashion and products. McDonalds, KFC, Pizza hut and Dominos too have found a prominent place in the market.
Globalization has successful found a market for western brands and joints in India but in turn many small shopkeepers are suffering from loss of business due to this new market and it is also hampering the Indian values. The aftermath
Globalization has successfully brought unprecedented prosperity, but with certain drawbacks. With the growing demand, the city is now flooded with huge buildings, heavy traffic and growing population. Thousands of apartments are under construction on the outskirts of the city to accommodate the growing population. Many farmers who sold their land for development have become rich, but in turn impacted the agriculture growth. Also, the villages outside the city are still departed from the benefits of globalization since the growth is concentrated only to the city and its outskirts. The high income of IT workers enables them to spend lavishly. The IT boom also increased the cost of living in the city which could not be afforded by all and forced them to move away from the city.
Bengaluru is a cosmopolitan city having young affluent professionals from across the nation. The local language of the city is Kannada, but today English, Hindi and Tamil are more widely spoken than the native language. This forced the state government to include Kannada as instruction language instead of Hindi. Due to the natives pressure even the city name got changed from Bangalore to Bengaluru.

Bengaluru has a traditional fruit and vegetable market since centuries where peddlers with carts come to earn their daily wages. But the hi-tech companies are forcing the state government to demolish it in order to widen
the road to Electronic city. (BBC News, n.d.).
The social division within the city has become more prominent since the last two decades. Educated professionals migrated for higher income jobs and workers came in for labor jobs. The IT boom prospered everyone, but the gap between the rich and poor probably widened.
The natives of Bengaluru who were not a part of the IT industry felt left out and were afraid the way the city was shaping up. This increased social tension within the city causing political rifts. Looking at a bigger picture, globalization has eased communication across the boundaries, facilitated exchange of cultural values and provided the world as one open market for any flourishing business.
