1949. With the cloud of fog covering me, I was walking into the unknown. Each step I took, a well-formed drop of sweat dripped from the tip of my nose. With the fear of hearing the click that ignite mines, I tip-toped over the wet muddy ground slowly. Every movement I made created a tingle in my body, especially when the very tip of my old boot felt the mud. As I was lost in the fog, there was no help that could be reached.
When I tried so hard to see penetrate the fog, I saw an angel. I thought it was my imagination; however as I blinked, the angel was still smiling at me. As a chain of thoughts came into my head, I was terrified. Was this the feeling of death? Was I dead? Carrying these menacing thoughts, I stood there staring at the angel. My mind flashed to the happy memories I cherished with my family and friends. People say that before you die, you see a flashback of your life.
As my heart sank to the very bottom, I became more convinced that I was dead. I felt the worst experience one could have; at least I should have said good-bye to my family. While I was lost in my thoughts, I forgot about the mines. I took my steps one by one in a normal pace forward, imagining myself walking toward the gate of heaven. Since the fog reduced its thickness, the gate became clearer to me. Suddenly, I heard a yell! SS Hey, Wang!” , that caught my attention.
It was from one of my military friends, Chen. Do dead people share the same path I questioned myself? ! SSWhat took you so long? !” Chen asked! SSWhat are you doing here? !” ! SSWhat do you mean? We! |re running away. !” ! SSWhat? Aren! |t we dead? !” ! SSWhat are you talking about? !” It felt like I was reincarnated, god returned my life back to me. The feeling was breathtaking; I couldn! |t wait to be with my family.

This motivation was carried within each and every one of us. We had survived in escaping the battle. As my friends and I gathered together and walked through the gate to take a rest, we heard an explosion behind us. We were blown away about 5 meters as the blast carried us along. We were terrified and looked at each other right into each other! |s eyes that we saw our own reflection. Lee ignited that mine, he was dead.
He was the only one that wasn! |t out of the fog yet. He was a great man and his death was a horrible incident. We all knew that coming to the war was a dangerous thing to do and that death is unpreventable sometimes. People die in war all the time and it! |s a depressing thing.
However, it had never occurred to the people that I was closed to, such as Lee, before and the feeling was definitely dreadful. I wish that I could have been there to help him out. How unlucky he was to have to die, how would his family feel? All these thoughts hit me, while I was appalled. My heart was once again sunk to the very bottom, all those dreadful thoughts and feelings returned to me. It felt as if god had just stole my life again.
My mind was getting dizzy and I wasn! |t sure whether I was conscious or not. I wanted to let out all the tears that I held in and act like a man. Suddenly, when I regained consciousness, my feet picked me up and I started to dash toward Lee. All the other comrades held me back and stopped me. I cried letting out the tears that I couldn! |t hold any longer. The feeling was unbearable.
All I wanted to do was just to see him one last time. I remembered before the battle, we promised each other to have faith and never give up no matter what happened and must meet each other at the gate. Through the war, I learnt how some things are unavoidable just like death during war. As we moved on, we finally reached the station and reported to the captain. Everyone gathered together and sang a prayer to the dead. The battle was finally over, and everyone was respected and honored for attending the war, even though we didn! |t achieve victory.

I couldn! |t wait to get home to see my children and wife. It had been a year and I had had absolutely no contact with them. I had been waiting for this reunion for a year already and when it finally arrived, I didn! |t know what to say. As I reached the front gate of the house, I could foresee that this story would pass on for generations.
