Over the years their have been many ways that various forms of visual entertainment media, like movies, and television has influenced American culture. All you have to do to see an example of this is look at how our fashions change decade after decade and seem to go right with Hollywood. About any new style that hits is started by the star of some television show or a musician. In the 1970’s all of the girls had to have the Farrah Fawcett hair style from Charlies Angels, or the cut off shorts that have been known every since as Daisy Dukes. Hollywood has definitely been a major influence on our society and culture.
The social influences of the visual entertainment media have been both positive and negative. On the positive side, I think that visual media, like television and movies has helped to thwart racism and bring equality to both, people of color, and women. This is just an example of one of the positive aspects. A negative aspect that I can think of is that it has made us hated by a lot of other cultures. They do not see us as who we are. They only see us as what has been portrayed in movies by someone. Also, I think that a lot of the violence in schools these days, like the shootings and bullying would not be going on if it was not for these children seeing it on the television or in the movies. They are trying to emulate one of their favorite movie stars or some gangster rapper. They do not realize that most of these people are no different than the rest of us and that it is all an act just to get attention and to make money. So I think that if people did not see someone acting like they were some kind of thug, and shooting people, or selling drugs, that there would be a lot less of them types of things going on in real life. You do not hear about people getting shot or dying from drug overdoses in places where they do not have access to visual media like we do here in the United States.
