Mr. K. and his wife established strict control for their sons life. If he did something wrong on their opinion they strictly punished him. They escorted him to the school and back. When their neighbours called the police it could do nothing but informed our service about the case.
When we tried to speak with the parent, they refused to do it saying that it was slander, they were very aggressive to us taking our intrusion in their private relations negatively. The dilemma was that should we continue our interference in their private affair or not. We had no power to do that but we had an authority to speak with them for the purpose of solving the conflict peacefully. Private life of the family is their own matter, they tried to protect the son from the drugs but the way they chose is not permissive according to the humans rights. The potential outcome was that if they not to stop behave in such a way they would be bringing to account for cruel treatment. And it actually happened.
The police intruded into the situation being informed that they severely beating the boy. We could do noting but step aside and wait for the police decision. When the case became the police care it was impossible to influence on its decision, because they acted according to the letter of the law. We lost time at the beginning did not insisting on the necessity of our help, even if both parties were against our interference. If we did so, we could help as parents to find the appropriate way out as the boy. Now, there is no doubt that the situation was handled differently.
Primarily, it would be more rational to start cooperation with the police in this case, and help both parties come to peaceful decision of the matter. So, social workers can prepare themselves to address and resolve ethical dilemmas by sharpening their awareness of the ethical standards meant to guide practice and that serve as the basis against which the behavior of the social worker will be judged in cases of ethical misconduct. Developing ones ability for ethical reasoning can help prevent errors in judgment and forestall charges of ethical misconduct and will result in better service to clients. Knowing ones ethical obligations in advance of ethical conflicts may prevent ethical misconduct. In addressing ethical dilemmas, social workers often fail to acknowledge and accept that personal values, life experiences, and unaccounted for influences (personal, cultural, religious beliefs and preferences) do affect professional decisions. The social worker must also take into account any agency or legal mandates to which he or she might be held responsible.
