This question has been the subject of ongoing debate. Why are so many people skeptical of it? When people think of sport they think of; good bodies, strict diets, tough training, competitions and possible professional careers. When actually comparing dance to sport a lot of similarities are uncovered to support that dance really is a sport.
Television has recognized that dance is a sport, but are selling it to the public as entertainment only; almost like putting a safety blanket around them. They telecast competitions like the National Dance Sport Championships, commonly known as ballroom national finals, which have commentators and presenters known to common audiences mixed in with the real veterans of dance sport commendation. Dancing with the Stars is another program that is using this safety blanket: people vote for their favourite ballroom dance, but they are shown all the hard work that goes on throughout the week and the stars who participate, including sporting stars, let it be known. The Biggest Loser recently as a reward for winning the weigh in, recently took the winning red team to a dance class as a good workout that would still be fun.
Some people may say that this is not supporting dance as a sport, but it can be seen as it is due to the fact that they use mainstream sports as well; so people connect the two subconsciously. The new program So You Think You Can Dance is a little less subtle, despite the public voting process. It is purely a televised competition to find a dancer who is versatile and talented enough to do all different dances and work. It is basically an elongated televised audition tweaked for audience entertainment, but it really gets down to the essence of the industry as much as an entertainment program can. What it shows hopefully gets through to people about how much of a sport dance really is.
The Essay on Sports People Do Not Make Good Role Models
ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY SPORTS PEOPLE DO NOT MAKE GOOD ROLE MODELS There is much evidence to support the argument that steroid use is widespread in the Olympics. Rugby League Footballers abuse alcohol, there is widespread corruption in cricket, racism in football, Rugby League and AFL and violence and fights among the players. Sports people generally make very bad role models. Athletes who use ...
Preparation is a part of almost anything you will ever do, whether it is sports day, swimming carnivals or the Olympics, preparation is the basis for success. The preparation and training involved in sports is common knowledge: stretching, strength work, stamina work, fitness work, practices, outside of class exercising and athlete diets. These are all under the big catchment of, what I like to call, Focus & Ability. This Focus & Ability is just as tough and important in the dance world as it is in the sporting world. Dance training, sometimes known of as rehearsals, depending on the coming event, is the same as in any sport, except that the training consists of your entire body (from flexibility to strength) not just the part for that particular sport. Dance training results in dripping sweat, satisfied exhaustion and stronger, fitter bodies. Not only do you just improve on one type of sport, you learn a new routine, or dance, each time; so on top of this life workout, there are new steps to remember. Dancers also have a diet that is as strict as an athletes diet along with a similar exercise regime.
Dangers resulting in injury are a large part of the dance industry as well as the sporting industry. There are constant news bulletins about a cricketer or Olympian who has injured themselves training or competing, but there are just as many injuries occurring in dance. In one So You Think You Can Dance season: there was a minimum of at least four injuries. For example; a professional ballet dancer, whos name cannot be recalled, was actually so dedicated to her sport, that during multiple performances she kicked herself in the head so hard that she actually knocked herself out cold. Dancers only take time off if they physically cant dance, unlike sports people who take off weeks or months. Dancers dance with broken toes, badly sprained ankles and more.

Competitions of both mainstream sports and dance sport go from local, to regional, to state, to national, to international. Mainstream sporting competitions are so well known that the worlds countries fight to hold them (eg: Olympics).
Dance competitions are as worldwide and have a diversity of competitors as wide as mainstream sports do. If this is the case why then arent they televised or included in such events like the Olympics if there is just as much preparation and skill? Dance competitions, although on a stage instead of in a gym or arena, are just as tough and stressful. There are multiple judges, like in gymnastics, all set to watch separate parts; technique, performance, ability, synchronization etc following very tough and precise rules. There are medals, placings, awards, prizes, hosts, uniforms, costumes, behind the scenes intimidation; all things that are part of sporting competitions. The only difference here would be that dancers also do performances and gigs as well as competitions, but the training is the same no matter what.
All this happens, whether at a beginner or professional level, but at different extremities. In schools, Physical Education consists of mainstream sports throughout, but dance only as a little under minded section in lower grades. It is true that dance can be considered as a bit harder and take more natural skill, but mainstream sports require natural skill as well. Dance Studies is the separate class to PE, but they both go towards the same SACE and have a similar syllabus, so why does that cause it to not be continued in PE and given its own separate class? Sports start with joining a team or league (eg: little athletics, footy team etc) and working up the levels as high as each individuals life permits. Dance starts just the same: join a class, team, performing arts basics school (eg: a gyms dance class, Mighty Good Talent School etc) and work up to the highest class and then maybe start working.
A career in sport is something that returns great admiration at a professional level. Dance provides a good career, but unfortunately is not as stable due to the inability of the world to accept it as a sport. It can bring fame, but not nearly as much fame as a cricketer or Olympian. It will bring in a paycheck, if you make an audition or place in a competition, but not as large a paycheck as a cricketer or Olympian. There are so many sports that do not even go through everything that dancers do physically and mentally (eg: lawn bowls and shooting).
The Essay on Sport Encourage Competition
Sports encourage competition rather than cooperation. Therefore, sports should not be encouraged at school. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the statement? Sports enrich students campus life and energize their physiques. Faced with immense pressure from work and study, more and more people begin to realize the importance of physical training. However, there is a heated debate over ...
It is almost ironic, seeing as dance is also a performance entertainment sport as opposed to run to the line or jump into the sandpit or shoot the target.
After comparing sport and dance, the conclusion has to be that sport and dance are basically matched in all aspects except public acceptance. After reading this opinionated argument, how can you, the reader, really not agree to the statement Dance is a Sport.
