Is Freedom Really Free A person, place, or thing not under the control or power of another defines freedom. Freedom can be described as independence, free rein, or home rule. I believe that liberty comes with a price. I feel that our rights and privileges can easily be seized by others if we do not stand up together as one nation.
In school we learned all about the Declaration of Independence and what our nation had to go through to establish freedom of speech, religion, and the press. To gain this home rule, the forefathers had to go to battle and die so that we would be able to be where we are now. Thomas Paine, a writer in 1877, wrote, ” Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom, must, like men, undergo the fatigues of supporting it.” I learned about national unity through my grandfathers. They both fought in World War II to preserve the democracy and free rein of our nation. One grandfather was shot in the leg by a Japanese soldier. My freedom was won by sacrificing of their family and friends’ lives, and they tell stories that make me understand there is a price to pay to keep freedom.
Douglas MacArthur, a general of World War II said, “No man is entitled to the blessings of freedom unless he be vigilant in its preservation.” My grandfathers believed this and took action. On September 11, reality touched my life. I learned about terrorism. Our independence was taken away. Now we endure body searches, limited transportation, increased prejudice, and an awareness of what happened in the past. I feel that our government did the right thing by sending troops over to terrorist country.
