The Sixties was definitely a decade to remember for a lifetime. Also known as the “Swinging Sixties”, many remarkable events occurred during this time. Things such as “Flower Power”, drugs, the Vietnam War, the Space Race against Russia and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy were some of the many highlights of the Sixties.
With trends in the clothing, music, movies, and changes in parent-child relationships, one can prove that the Sixties was a noteworthy decade. Early fashion in the Sixties started out plain clothes designed for the older generation. Not long after, small boutiques started to sell colourful and cheaper clothing for the youth. With this came along miniskirts, leather boots, velvet trousers, very short shorts and plaid. From around 1960 to 1962, the bouffant dress was in style.
It was tight at the top and puffed out at the bottom. Black slacks also became a favourite to wear out in public. To match these outfits, the beehive hairstyle was in. Women would take their hair and pile it up onto their head and made it look like a beehive. Accessories included were dark glasses and float shoes for women while the men preferred to wear sandals. During 1963, the suit that the Beatles wore became popular for the gentlemen.
It was known to have a slim pants and a single-breasted jacket. Women would want the wet looking vinyl outfits that were sold. Throughout 1964, the space look sprung out. Shiny, reflective clothing and styles were popular amongst the crowd. Another colour scheme involved was neon colours.

One of the most memorable Woodstock festivals occurred on August 15 through 17 1969. It became a great accomplishment in the history of rock music. The members of the band, known as the “Fab Four”, included George Harrison, Ringo Starr, John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
They appeared on the “Ed Sullivan Show.” Their concerts were quickly sold out wherever they performed. The love for this band became known as “Beatlemania.” The Rolling Stones was another remarkable band. They were complete opposites of The Beatles. The band members included Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, Keith Richards, Charlies Watts, Bill Wyman, Ron Wood and Mick Taylor. The band stood for rebellion.

To follow up on the first movie, Hollywood came up with From Russia With Love in 1963 and Gold finger in 1964. With the release of the James Bond movies, it gained in popularity and James Bond movies still continue today.
Musicals were also a popular genre in the movie business in the Sixties. Julie Andrews became famous for her musicals. She starred in Mary Poppins in 1964 and in the following year, starred in The Sound of Music. Many toys and games came along in this decade.
Action figures such as GI Joe became popular with the boys. Barbie started to grow more and more popular as girls started to buy them. The Magic Eight Ball gained interest along with the classic game “Hands Down.” The Sixties became a decade known for rebellion. The “perfect family” set by the previous decades became destroyed. With the use of drugs, sex, protesting and riots, children started to stray away from their parents.
There were also many other negative influences on children and teenagers such as certain rock bands, movies and television. Much of the respect towards their parents that was expected was lost. Overall, the years throughout 1960 to 1969 proved to be a memorable decade. It was a decade that marked incredible changes. With vast changes in fashion, it was difficult to keep up with what was popular and what was not.
Music became rebellious with illicit drugs, sex and foul language, which had a negative effect on the youth at the time. Action movies featuring James Bond were a favourite with the public. The most popular musicals featured Julie Andrews. Toys such as Barbie and GI Joe attracted a huge amount of consumers. With the significant changes in the culture came changes in the family. Children and teenagers started to stray away from their parents and grew more rebellious.
With this, the Swinging Sixties was truly an exceptional decade and without it, it leaves one to wonder what the following decades would be like.
