Jean Jacques Rousseau’s concept of freedom is the ability of man to influence the outcome of his life; in essence, to master his own destiny. He maintained that freedom was naturally inherent to humankind, but still in its inchoate state—innocent, and waiting to learn all that it is to be learned in the world. Until such time that man utilizes what structured democracy has to offer, man will never reach the utopian ideal of global liberty or complete freedom.
Man has the inclination to be subservient to the will of an individual with a higher status; thus, to realize the desired outcome of his life, he leaves the decision-making to the general will of the people through their representatives. The real meaning is that the representatives are given the prerogative, due to the trust given to them by those in the lower stratum of the society, to do things for the general welfare of the whole humanity. This is because, to quote from the article, “people accepted their born status and looked forward towards monarchy and even government officials as their betters in society.”
Because of the fact that complete freedom is inherent in every man, but in its inchoate state, man is to be left alone to learn and experience how it is to act without interference from external sources like the teachings of adults and the society; in essence, it is “necessary for no acculturation to be imparted on the child.”
