Carter began to run for presidency after the democratic national convention in 1972. His chief motto was to tell the people the truth and give them the best. He believed that why hide it from the public, who gives you their faith. His decision about running presidency was influenced when he stared meeting the president like Truman and Nixon. During the convention in 1972 he began to assess his strength and weakness, which was first serious step towards running for presidency.
He laid out some of the points / issues that he faced while running, such as how being a farmer is beneficial and how he living in Plains, Georgia didn’t help him a lot because of the small population or how he had to travel a lot for the press conference. He over came many difficulties like even though he would get invited for lunch / interview , he would not get to eat anything regardless of delicious food. Not only did he prepare for the speeches he also kept up to date with readings from scientific journals and other scientific journals. At the end he brings up the two questions that reside in citizen’s mind: can govt. be honest, decent, open etc.
and can our govt. be competent. He replies saying that the only reason both the questions can be answered if the candidates are honest with the people, you cannot ask for someone’s trust if you are not ready to tell them the truth. Once the first issue is resolved the govt.
will be competent.
