Psychologist John Holland developed a theory that states a strong link exist between a ones personality and career satisfaction. He called this the personality-type theory. He identified six personality types and their best matches in his career satisfaction theory. These are the Realistic, Investigative, Artistic , Social, Enterprising and the Conventional (organizer).(Witt/Mossler; 2010) I found that I relate most the Social personality type. I enjoy interacting with others and solving their problems. When reviewing the matching career choices for this personality type, I was relieved to find that nursing , which has been my career for 19 years, was listed.
Other careers listed included therapist and psychologist, which are the areas I plan to be working in after I complete this program. It also states that jobs involving machines, animals, or isolated work does not appeal to this personality type. This also true of my personality. I worked in a sewing factory for a year when I was about 19 and that was one of the most miserable times in my life. Working as a nurse for the past 19 years has been rewarding with great job satisfaction.
I feel that when you like what you get up and do every day, and you are also good at it, your self-esteem and self-image improve dramatically. I also find that I do cross over to the Enterprising personality type as well. Before I became a nurse, two of my favorite jobs were both in retail sales. I had worked in a jewelry store and in a furniture store. I did very well at both jobs. I feel that the satisfaction I felt probably came from the interaction with the public more than enjoying persuading others or being in charge.
