John Lennon is a name known around the world. He was the singer, song writer and rhythm guitarist in what many people consider to be the world’s greatest band, The Beatles. He was killed at the age of 40 in December of 1980 by a deranged fan. However, his short life of forty years left a legacy that inspired millions of people around the world. Lennon was so much more than just a musician; he was also an artist, activist, and author. His intelligence, outspoken personality and undeniable creativity make him a person of admiration in my eyes.
As a young boy, John knew that he was different than most. He grew up in with a solemn and unusual childhood. His father left him at a young age and his mother, Julia was struck and killed by an off-duty police driver who was driving drunk, which left him to be in the care of his Aunt Mimi. Lennon was not a fan of school. He had a brilliant mind but was against the conformity of school and listening to teachers. By the stories Lennon has told it is obvious his mind worked in a different way than most, and at some points his genius went over the heads of some, including his teachers.
He once said that his mother told him happiness was the key to life, he went on to say, “When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ” As we now know, John Lennon grew up to a revolutionary musician, one whose lyrics were not repetitive or about material things. Lennon did not just write music for the money. He wrote music to send messages of peace and to remind everyone that “all you need is love”.

Just from listening to his songs, reading his books or watching him on film interviews it is undeniable that Lennon possesses a charming wit and rebellious nature like no other. John Lennon was known to be the “outspoken Beatle”. He never failed to express exactly what was on his mind in regards to his opinions on war, religion, racism and violence. After seven years of touring, the release of 13 albums, Lennon met and fell in love with avant-garde artist Yoko Ono and the unity of the Beatles began to disband.
Lennon moved on to his own solo projects and in 1971 he released the ground-breaking song, “Imagine”. In it he addressed issues of racism and war. He stated that he was a “dreamer, but.. not the only one” he hope that world could come together and unify with the hope of universal peace. During the Vietnam War, he and Ono began an antiwar movement with the release of songs such as “Give Peace a Chance” and he and Ono’s infamous “bed-ins for peace” in which they stayed in bed with signs to promote peace.
They filled billboards with signs saying “make love, not war” and, “war is over (if you want it)”. In 1969 Lennon’s song “Give Peace a Chance” was sung by 500,000 protesters in Washington DC at the Vietnam Moratorium Day which only furthered his image as a social giant. Lastly, the most concrete mark that John Lennon has left is his irrefutable creativity in his art, most importantly his music. During the 60’s and 70’s rock music began to spread as much more than just tunes to sing along with.
Music was beginning to influence fashion, social life of the youth, attitudes and language. A major part of this was the spreading of music from the Beatles. The song writing partnership of John Lennon and Paul McCartney was one of best in musical history. Lennon is remembered as the more “edgy” of the two with eccentric masterpieces such as “I Am the Walrus”, “Strawberry Fields Forever”, and “Across Universe”, just to name a few.

Lennon also brought forward revolutions in musical technology which many artists still carry on today. John Lennon is a hero for many, but for all he has provided a soundtrack of unique songs and art that can be carried on forever. His traits of intelligence, outspokenness, and undeniable creativity make him a person of admiration in my eyes. I may have been born fifteen years after the death of John Lennon, but even then he has left behind a legacy that has left a huge mark in my life and for millions around the world.
