In my essay I will discuss the theme of loneliness in the novel “Of Mice And Men.” The essay will consist of information based on the novel towards minor characters such as Curley’s Wife, Candy and Crooks. This essay will state information about Curley’s Wife, Candy and Crooks’ loneliness. Curley’s Wife was probably one of the loneliest characters of all. She never talked to anyone and she never really liked Curley all too much. “Why can’t I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody.
I get awful lonely.” (p. 86) Curley’s Wife seems to get a lot of the other guys in trouble. Curley always suspects that she’s fooling around with the other men, “Any you guys seen my wife?” (p. 53) Curley’s Wife always gives an excuse to confront the guys saying, “Any you guys seen Curley?” Then she tries to hang around and make conversation. The guy’s see her as a tramp and a troublemaker but all she wants is someone to talk too. Crooks who is another lonely man was very sad as well.
Because he was black he wasn’t allowed into the other guys bunkhouse with them because they thought he stunk. “Why ain’t you wanted?” Lennie asked. “‘Cause I’m black. They play cards in there, but I can’t play because I’m black.
They think I stink. Well I tell you, you all stink to me.” (p. 68) Crooks is always by himself and working hard even with a broken back. Crooks sits in his room all the time by himself.
The Essay on Both Curley’s Wife and Crooks
Steinbeck’s novel “Of Mice and Men” was set in the Great depression in 1930s America. The characters reflect the struggles and harsh times many working Americans faced in that era. Isolated, lonely, marginalised and mistrustful, people had to create new lives for themselves. In the novel Steinbeck describes several characters that are vulnerable due to the social context of that time; Crooks and ...
Candy is the other character that is lonely. Not because of the the men not talking to him of anything like that. Because, when Carlson shot his old dog, Candy felt alone. Candy had that pup since he was a kid. Candy regretted of not shooting that dog himself. “I ought to of shot that dog myself, George.
I shouldn’t let no stranger shoot my dog.” (p. 61) In conclusion, loneliness is a big issue for minor characters in this time and in this novel. Each Candy, Crooks and Curley’s Wife were lonely characters. I fell sorry for the characters at this hard time in life.
