Fordan Position Paper Country: Jordan Committee: United Nations Security Council School: Palos Verdes Peninsula HS Topic: North Syrian refugee crisis History and Background As Syria’s uprising descends into an increasingly bloody civil war, the number of refugees fleeing the fighting has rocketed. In August 100,000 people escaped to safety in the neighboring states of Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon, and Iraq. The rate of people seeking refuge has brought the total to over 235,000 registered refugees, according to The United Nations refugee agency UNHCR.
The number of unregistered refugees is estimated to be a far greater number, possibly as high as 1. 5 million. Even though the refugees escaped the civil war when they crossed the border they now face new problems. Jordan, Lebanon, and Iraq are not capable of handling the crisis and most of the refugees are living in hastily put together camps. Resources, shelter, and work are all scarce for the refugees, and the international community has been slow to respond. The rapidly expanding crisis poses problems not only for refugees. The host states worry about the social, economic, and political pressures their new guests have brought.
The Essay on The Syrian Refugee Crisis: Canada Is Not Playing Its Role
The Syrian civil war originating in 2011 has put millions in perilous situations, now involving most of the international community. They ask the international community to provide money to enable the countries to respond to the growing humanitarian needs of Syrian refugees. United Nations President Jeremic said that at least 80,000 people have perished since the start of the hostilities. Over four million more people have been internally displaced since the fighting began. Jordan’s Policy
My country, Jordan has taken in Syrian refugees since the beginning of the uprising. We currently host nearly 540,000 Syrian refugees. This is roughly 10% of Jordan’s population. While some refugees live in camps, the majority reside in Jordanian towns and cities. As our Information Minister Mohammad Momani said, “Our position on the situation in Syria has not changed. We are still against any military intervention in Syria. We urge a political solution to end the bloodshed in Syria. ” Deraa, where protesters first clashed with the forces of President Bashar al-Assad in March 2011, is only about 3 miles from the border.
The first refugees were mostly people from Deraa, but as the violence spread Syrians from Damascus, Homs and Hama started crossing the border. We are struggling to cope with the rapidly expanding numbers of refugees. The economic impact of the refugee crisis has cost upward of $700 million and little has been done by the international community to help. We Jordanians remain sympathetic to our Syrian guests. But we worry that economic problems could cause internal political tension. Competition for resources such as jobs, education and health services are already straining the economy.

Jordan has made diplomatic efforts to find a political solution that prevents the collapse of Syria. Since the start of the Syrian uprising Jordan has been neutral, despite pressure from internal and external powers to toughen its public posture towards Damascus. In the end, the government of Bashar al-Assad will ultimately have to leave Syria and allow elections by the people of Syria to elect a new government to end this bloody and violent civil war. What shape that new government takes is unknown. But, the current situation is worse than anything that any other outcome.
