From the time the U. S. first became a country, people from other countries were moving America. Many immigrants believed America was something great and special, but they soon learned what America was really about. Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan illustrates the American Experience through immigration and social acceptance. My dad’s family emigrated here from Portugal and although my grandfather was born in San Leandro, California, he moved to Portugal where he met my grandmother and had a family.
By the time my dad was five years old, my grandparents were ready to move to America and start a new life there. When they arrived it wasn’t easy for them to adjust even though they lived in a prominently Portuguese community, my father wasn’t accepted easily when he began school. Now my dad is considered an American, but he will always remember it wasn’t easy to receive that title. In Joy Luck Club, the four women analyzed in the novel were all immigrants to American from China and the change was not easy for them or the move.
Su yuan Woo made the hard decision to move to San Francisco, California from the life she was accustom to in China. When she made the move, she left behind the idea of finding her two children she was forced to abandon long before.
