Jurassic Park, a novel by Michael Crichton is an intellectual mind thriller. This science fiction ride is full of tension and intellect. The story is about a man filled with greed and his experimental use of genetics to create extinct life forms namely, dinosaurs. The profound themes and exhilarating plot line give society a new outlook on life and technology.
The plot of Jurassic Park is both complex and provocative. Early in the novel we are told about several “reptile” attacks in the country of Costa Rica. John Hammond, an aged, wealthy, eccentric scientist and owner of the bio-genetics company Ingen, attempts to build the extreme of all theme parks. He creates his own island on the top of a volcanic landmass and names it Isla Nublar. It is the extreme of all parks, because it contains dinosaurs, which are meant to be gone of this Earth. However, before the park opens to the public, Hammond’s lawyer, Donald Genarro believes that Hammond must first get the reactions and opinions of an elite group of people. Among this group is Dr. Alan Grant, a palaeontologist, Ellie Sattler, Grant’s student and paleobotonist and Ian Malcolm, a mathematician highly fascinated with the chaos theory. Along with the group are Hammond’s grand children, Tim and Lex Murphy. These people are invited for a tour of the park and its buildings. Meanwhile, the systems designer for the park Dennis Nedry decides to turn his back on the company in his own greed. He meets with Lewis Dodgson, founder of Ingen’s rival company to receive his instructions.

He is offered one and a half million dollars if he is successful in stealing embryos from the park labs. While the group of individuals is on their tour of the park, they witness some of the dinosaurs, raptors, on a boat leaving the mainland. They are escaping. Not soon after this encounter, Nedry decides to go through with his plan. In the midst of all his deceptions, he is successful in turning off the security systems to the park, helped along with a power failure. This means the tour group is stranded and the animals can break free. Coincidentally, when this occurs, the group’s means of travel, two land cruisers are stopped right out side the Tyrannosaurus paddock. They are attacked by the T-rex and stranded in the wilderness. Grant and the children are now alone in the park, and trying to get back to safety. In the end, the group finds out that the “female” dinosaurs are mating, and some are escaping off the island. People die, and when the remainder of the group is rescued, the treacherous island is bombed and destroyed by the Costa Rican National Guard. When finally the group is out of harms way, they find that they are forced to have a long “vacation” complements of the Costa Rican Government.
The theme of this novel is one of the more important aspects of the book that keeps the reader interested. Throughout this story, you are always thinking that in the end, everyone will live “happily ever after”. In the back of your mind however, you learn that to be fully interested in this book, would mean cancelling out a part of that happy ending, and some of the good tidings. In this book it means that some of the main characters had to die. Within this novel, it is Ian Malcolm and John Hammond who depart from their lives. One of the themes in this tale is that in an unstable situation, you should always expect the unforeseen.
The death of Hammond, the creator of the park, is actually ironic to the fact that however stubborn he was to Malcolm’s suggestions, the mathematician was correct in thinking that Hammond’s success in science, is a failure in itself. Hammond’s stubbornness to believe that he had done an unethical act actually made his death practical to the story. The deaths of his staff and employee’s are his fault. Therefore he deserved to be the victim of his own creation. Another theme of this novel is that no matter how hard or easy as it may seem, one cannot be filled with self-indulgence and try to play the role of God. As the book shows, this creates a magnitude of chaos.

Another important aspect of this story, was the plot. A good story will have a good method of stringing the events together. In this novel, Crichton leaves you hanging from one group or persons situation, and get the perspective of another. This creates a feeling of suspense throughout the whole novel. It also helps with the realization of the smaller situations, in the one massive scenario. The way Crichton puts his events in a certain order also creates foreshadowing. This is an extremely important aspect of this book, because it occurs in many situations.
Ian Malcolm is always stating how the “chaos theory” will affect future events. He plainly states behind his jumble of complicated words, that the park will fail if one simple thing fails. Not long after this statement is said, Dennis Nedry decides to go behind enemy lines and join Ingen’s rival company Biosyn. Nedry’s mission for Biosyn is to collect frozen embryos, from the labs at Jurassic Park. This requires him to shut down all security systems of the park. Coincidentally, the tour group is currently stranded in the two land cruisers when the “power failure” occurs. From this point on, every last drop of hope for survival disintegrates.
Malcolm’s statement is realized in the end, by all that heard his pessimistic thoughts about the park. Even Malcolm himself knew too much for his own good, and died.
The plot gives a story form and shape, and that is what makes this book so wonderful. The shape of the story allows for the imagination to run wild, and yet for the mind to become captured within the walls of the novel.

Jurassic Park was a remarkable science fiction novel. What keeps it apart from other books, is its attention to detail. If you are going to write a good book you will need a firm foundation from which to start the story. You will also need to have a multitude of characters to bring the story to life. Michael Crichton did this with exceptional skill, which makes the novel excel. The suspenseful plot line kept me reading and at some points in the novel I felt as if I were in a character’s shoes. That gave the novel a feeling of reality in a fantasy world. It was a wonderful experience to read this book and it took me far away from the trauma of real life, to the stresses of a fictional storybook. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has a good mind for absorbing information, and a well-determined.
