“Keeping Up with the Kardashians (often referred to simply as The Kardashians) is an American reality television series that premieres on E!. It follows the lives of the Kardashian/Jenner family, including sisters Kourtney, Kim, and Khloe Kardashian” (Wikipedia).
Keeping up with the Kardashian’s is a very famous show amongst all the young women, ages anywhere from twelve to mid thirty’s. Baran would argue that being a media literate is important because this show is a huge show and these sisters are very famous amongst a lot of different kind of people.
All of the sisters are gorgeous; they dress nicely and live the life that many people can just dream of. Therefore, many women out there buy clothes like the Kardashians wear, or curl their hair like the Kardashian sisters do and sometimes even start talking like them. Media only shows the glamour, the success and good but not the struggle behind the scenes. Yes, the Kardashian’s are living an amazing life but at the same time they do go through criticism and humiliation. “Television influences our culture in innumerable ways” (23 Baran).
This quote is simply answering our question of how badly can media or things on television can affect our lives. media literacy can be taken in two ways, good or bad; and most of the time people normally tend to take the media literacy in a bad way. “Media literacy is a skill we take for granted, but like all skills, it can be improved” (24 Baran).
Does the entertainment media reflect the standards of the American people, or does the entertainment media define the standards of the American people? This question is difficult to answer because of the complex interaction between American culture and the entertainment industry. To some extent, the entertainment media does gets feedback on what viewers want to see in the form of Nielson ratings ...
Keeping up with the Kardashians is a great show and it does play a huge role in my life. When I watch this show, I want to own things that the sisters own and dress like them. That’s because I have become a huge fan of Kardashian’s and they mean a lot to me.
I have followed them on twitter, instagram and added them as a friend on facebook. This is my normal show to watch and I also watch Shah’s of Sunset. These are my two top shows that I watch when I have time. Shah’s of Sunset and Kardashian’s are really alike. Both of the shows are about rich, successful and high trend people, who like to throw their money in the air and watch it fly. I sit and analyze everything these celebrity’s wear, do, or how they talk and I can say some what these things do affect me; before I would never go shopping all dressed up but after seeing Kardashians do that I have started dressing up when I go shopping.
I am a media literate, I can analyze everything that’s happening in the show and the whole analyzing the characters does affect me. Most of the time media doesn’t really affect in a good way because sometime it makes us have an expensive taste but one great thing I’ve learned while watching both of these shows is that a women can be independent and be rich on her own without anyone’s help. Media scholars would like us to be very effected by Keeping up with the Kardashian’s.
They would like me to be affected by their lives, their lifestyle, and their looks because if we are not affected by any of the things then who will buy all the brands that Kardashians own or how will they make money for the show to happen. “The Kardashian Brand earned 65 Million Dollars from brand endorsements, clothing lines, skin care line, diet and nutrition supplements, books and fragrances” (Entrepreneur).
Kardashians seem to have a lot of endorsements and their items are sold from five dollars to five hundred dollars so people with any class can buy it. The media effects scholars want everyone to be affected in the same sense.
The standard assertion in most recent empirical studies is that "media affect what people think about, not what they think. " The findings here indicate the media make a significant contribution to what people think—to their political preferences and evaluations—precisely by affecting what they think about. A he belief that long dominated the scholarly community is that news messages have "minimal ...
Their expectation wouldn’t change by what I said because I think anyone or me; we are all being affected the way they want us to be affected. One of the theory’s that can be related to this kind of media effect is Symbolic interaction; “the idea that people give meaning to symbols and then those symbols control people’s behavior in their presence” (G-8 Baran).
In the Kardashian’s or in Shah’s of Sunset all of the characters wear branded things meaning they give meaning to symbolic things such as Louis Vuitton and Hermes. I have noticed that when people are rich and are wearing branded stuff, their attitude and behavior changes.
People give things meaning, and that meaning controls their behavior” (375 Baran).
One of my really close friend’s brother just won a lottery some months ago and she use to dress differently and behave differently before, now since she has the money and she can afford all the expensive things; her way of talking has changed as well as how she dresses. Keeping up with the Kardashians is a show that started in 2007 and since then not a lot has changed in this show, the characters dress in same manner, live almost the same kind of life they were living and wear expensive clothes like they use to.
The show was an instant hit for E! – in its first month on the air it became the highest-rated series on Sunday nights among men and women aged 18 to 34 and was also seen by 1. 3 million total viewers according … The second season continued the success and was viewed by 1. 6 million viewers, a 23% increase from the first season…The fifth season averaged 3. 11 million viewers” (Wikipedia).
This show is going up in the rates of their watchers so every time the new season comes out they have more and more watchers.
Scholars would expect the audience to be affected as they have been getting affected. All mothers should think they should look like Kris Jenner, all the women in their thirties should look like the Kardashian sisters and teenagers should look like the Jenner Sister’s. The cycle will keep on going just with different people. When the Jenner Sisters are in their thirties, Penelope (Kourtney’s daughter) will be a teenager. This cycle is never stopping as long as all the females of the family keep on doing what their best at, and they will keep on affecting the audience in the same way.
Changing Seasons Seasons are typically a pleasant thought for individuals. People commonly have a season or a type of weather that they consider their favorite.
