History:
The first cases of AIDS were discovered in 1981 in Los Angeles, California. Most cases of AIDS in the United States were diagnosed in homosexual men, who got the virus through sex, and drug users who became infected mainly by sharing dirty needles.
Cause:
The cause for the disease AIDS is HIV. HIV was discovered in 1983, and by 1985 tests to detect the virus had been developed. As of December 1996, there had been more than 8 million cases of AIDS worldwide, resulting in 6 million deaths. Approximately 750,000 individuals in the United States and 23 million individuals throughout the world were infected with HIV. More than 90 percent of HIV infections occurred on the increase countries.
Transmission:
HIV is transmitted mainly through exposure to blood, and breast milk. Although it is a transmissible virus, it cannot be spread through coughing, sneezing, or physical contact. The virus also can be spread from mother to child in the birthing process. Many individuals were infected from contaminated blood and blood products before screening procedures were introduced in the late 1980’s. Sexual transmission of HIV has been described from all sorts of people having sex through vaginal, anal area, and oral sex.
Symptoms:
The symptoms of this disease are very serious. If you had aids you could have a fever lasting more than 10 days, chills, heavy sweating especially at night. Swollen gums, sore throat, cough, shortness of breath, and diarrhea. Tumors, skin rashes, weight loss, and a headache. You could lose your speech and your memory, your joints would start swelling, getting stiff and getting pain in them. You get groin lumps, you could get blind spots in your vision. You could even get chest pain, back pain, loss of appetite, or indigestion.

Prevention:
The best way to avid AIDS is abstinence from sex until you are sure that your partner in your relationship is not infected with AIDS.
