Remembering back to the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 it took place from April 20- September 19, 010 when it was officially sealed. Although oil spreads faster in water than it would on land or underground the environmental impacts would on land as in water be detrimental. An oil spill in the middle of the United States (Nebraska) could lead to the harming of an aquifer that supplies 2 million people with drinking water. Remembering the consequences of past oil spill we learn that the United States is in no state to repeat its history.
The Keystone Pipeline is a system that transports crude oil and bitumen from Alberta, Canada to multiple sites in the United States. Adding the Keystone XL Pipeline to the already existing Keystone Pipeline in the U. S. would harm the land and human health if there were to be a spill as dramatic as the one we encountered in 2010. While working towards the approval of the Keystone XL Pipeline, the project was faced with many lawsuits and rejections from the president due to sensitivity of the land. This particular pipeline will serve U. S. markets, but create very few jobs for Canadians who were having their energy reduced.
The Keystone XL Pipeline will provide the U. S. with more crude oil while it affects the lives of many Canadians, the addition to the already existing pipeline is unnecessary and will only increase the American dependency on crude oil. For full background and timeline of the Keystone Pipeline and the Keystone XL Pipeline see page ……… Your Position While others may believe the pipeline to be essential to America’s continued use of crude oil I believe like Henry Waxman that the XL Pipeline will only enhance our reliance on the oil that we already consume over double our given rate.
The Essay on Bp Oil Spill 3

WIth building the Keystone XL Pipeline we have concerns of the risk of spills over the sensitive land, and the extensive emission of greenhouse gases. If the pipeline were to have a leak the land surrounding the pipeline would be affected, ultimately affecting millions of people. A leak in the XL Pipeline through Nebraska would mean the pollution of the Ogallala Aquifer that provides water to millions of people and supports twenty billion dollars of agriculture.
The pollution of the Ogallala Aquifer would mean that there would be an increased depletion to existing Aquifers and the need for a new discovery of new fresh water sources. Not only will the Aquifer be unable to use, if the water was used by our population we could conceive health problems due to the polluted water. Not only will human be affected by drinking the polluted water that agriculture that the Aquifer supports will be affected indirectly polluting the crops the human consumed animals will eat, or directly the crops that will be consumed by humans and other animals affecting the human populations health.
Not only will the human population be harmed, but the whole environment, the Aquifer spreads across eight states, each state’s soil and plant life will be affected from the pollutants that contaminated the water, with the pollution of the soil and plant life there will be wildlife that feeds off polluted soil and plant life ultimately polluting the consumers.
Although the pollution of the fresh water for eight states is detrimental, the green house gases that a pipeline leak would emit would be much more harmful to our environment as a whole. The green house gases that are released into the air from an oil leak affect not only the surrounding areas, but the Earth as a whole, the green house gases are released into the atmosphere that revolves around our entire Earth affecting different parts on an environment or in some cases the environment as a whole.
