King William I Biography
William I was born on 1797 and lived till 1888. During that time he was emperor of Germany from 1871-1888
and he was King of Prussia from 1861 – 1888. He was the father of King Fredrick William III. William I fled to
England in 1848 due to the revolution in Prussia. When he returned he commanded the army that defeated
the republicans in Baden. When William I’s brother was declared insane William became regent and then on
his
brother’s death he became King of Prussia. William I’s first order of business as King Of Prussia was to re-
organize and stregthen their army. William then set about appointing a new Prime Minister. His choice was
Otto Von Bismark, He appointed Bismark in 1862, From that day until William I died Bismark guided the
destiny of Prussia and Germany. Any opposition to either the King or Bismark was suppressed, but it wasn’t
until 1864 that the Prussian army began its millitary conflicts with Denmark on who should control a place
named Schleswig-Holstein. This battle then led to the Austro Prussian War which began in 1866. This is
when Prussia became the leading German power.
The next battle was the Franco-Prussian war in which William I himself commanded the army in 1870 this
war only lasted one year finishing in 1871. William I was proclaimed emperor of Germany on January 18, 1871
after receiving Napoleon III’s surrender at a place called Sedan. William was popular because of his symbol for

much that a few attempts were made to assasinate him. I beleive William I’s reign was crucial to the
history of Europe because it saw that Germany rise to power on the continent. William I’s son Fredrick III
succeeded him.
